The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

Re: The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

Ok here's a bump for the specs I kept forgetting to get of my Dad's '69 Deluxe.

Gibson Mini-Humbuckers with polepieces

Double Ring Klusons

I can't comment about the tuners making a differences because I've never done a direct comparison.

Nut Width-------------- 1 9/16 in

String Spacing at Bridge-1 15/16 in

Neck pickup height------1/8 in

Bridge pickup-----------3/32

On an unrelated topic now that I've really had some experience comparing long neck tennons and short neck tennons I've become convinced that the neck attachement method does make a difference. I've noticed that guitars with the shorter tennons have a more airy or topical sound with the neck pickup. The guitars with the long neck tennon seem to have a deeper sound, maybe a bit more thick, however they seem as articulate if not more so. I'd really like to try a whole lot of long neck tennon Pauls where I could say something definitive on it.

Re: The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

This is a very interesting thread, so I thought that I would contribute. I have owned a few Lesters over the years. My first guitar was a 74 wine red Custom that I paid $400 for in 1988. Back then you could buy a nice used Les Paul for under a grand all day long. If I known then what I know now, I would have bought several more. ;)

At the moment my go to Les Paul is a 2001 Classic gold top (pictured below). The Classics get overlooked a lot because of the Standard and Historic lines. Which is fine, I’m still very satisfied with my guitar. For me, the perfect Les Paul tone is big, fat a balanced. There are plenty of historic recording of the Les Paul tone. The reverend Billy G has recorded many of my favorites. And yes, there is something very magical about a good Les Paul and the right Marshall that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up in a good way.

Currently, my Classic is loaded with a Scremin Demon and a 59n. I use the Demon with a 300k pot. To me it has a very over-wound PAF vibe this way. I also like the pup because I play through a very dark amp (Carvin Legacy). My favorite pup combo for a Lester though is the 59/59 package.

The older I get, the more I strive to attain a more traditional approach to playing guitar. I have worked years developing my own style or voice in the guitar, but these days I work on the small nuances. I keep turning the gain down as well. I strive more for Hot, Blue and Righteous than Hot for Teacher, lol!

Re: The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

That's a gorgeous looking goldtop - the top carve and dark fretboard look really close to those of the originals. :cool2:

This thread hasn't seen the light of day in almost 6 years sooooooo....

ZOMBIE THREAD BUMP for the new guys!

Re: The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

I find it kind of silly, personally. Every instrument is different - one guy's measurements won't work across the board for everyone.

To my knowledge nobody forced you to read it or even post...

No one claimed every LP was the same, however a point of reference is helpful and Gibson, Fender, and many other manufacturers give you their "ideal measurements" when you buy a new instrument and those instruments aren't the same when they leave a factory either.

This thread focuses on getting a vintage-esque tone; as such it is a starting place for adjustments for fellow vintage tone seekers.

Re: The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

Define 'vintage LP tone' please.

See what I mean? What are you using as the standard?

And I'd bet dollars to donuts that on a forum like SD that people are big time pickup swappers - generic set-up measurements simply can't apply across the board for a variety of pickups.

Re: The Ultimate Les Paul Tone

Its not suppose to. Its just information for the curious no one is saying its the be all end all for all pickups. I'm pretty sure you would stab yourself in the face with a pen to hang around the real Les Paul cork sniffers. Those guys get off on measurements and argue for days over glue types used to attach the neck.

So just relax hes sharing his experience with us hes not telling you what you should do. Take the info for what its worth to you. If its worth nothing no one is forcing you to participate go read another thread but there are some that do enjoy reading about others experiences and the sharing of what they found.
