Re: The ULTIMATE SDUG Les Paul COPY preliminaries

Question: Do PRS Singlecuts count? Or do they have to look just like a Gibson (aside from headstock) only without the Gibson name?

Re: The ULTIMATE SDUG Les Paul COPY preliminaries

Dang...I was really hoping to avoid this question....

I don't know. What do you think?

Re: The ULTIMATE SDUG Les Paul COPY preliminaries

I'd say no. This could open the doors to any set neck/single cut, and seriously dilute this particular poll.

Re: The ULTIMATE SDUG Les Paul COPY preliminaries

i was wondering what the boundary conditions for this would end up being

i think we saw the splitting of the tele threads for good reasons ... what made a tele a tele, right?

so what makes a non-gibson "les paul copy"? ... is it the single cut? glued neck? 24.75" scale? mahog body? maple cap? rosewood neck? t.o.m. / stop tail? H-H? open book headstock? 2 vols, 2 tones?

Re: The ULTIMATE SDUG Les Paul COPY preliminaries

IMO it should be the general body shape.
All the others have been diluted by Gibson themselves:
Mahogany body/neck? 70s LPs.
24.75"? Buckethead's LP.
tom? Forgot the Access?
HH? What about the P90s and/or Mini-HB Pauls? The LP Junior also only had one pickup.
2 vol/2 tones? That's also been overridden on several occasions.

In short, IMO this shouldn't qualify:

But this should:

I foresee another snubbing, so I'll refrain from offering my submission.

You're the one who came up with this and the rules. ;)

Doesn't matter either way. I would say if it fits the shape AND has the proper control layout/scale of a Gibson, then yes. Otherwise, no. This means if it has no binding or flame top, that is fine.

So, to be specific, a PRS Singlecut with 25" scale and Gibson style control layout would not qualify but with a 24.75" scale it would. Or should the scale be left out and just leave the control layout and shape as the absolutes?

I would say if it has the basic LP single-cut shape AND the same basic layout (3-way switch on upper bout, then the 4-knobs in their standard diamond pattern on the lower.) I don't think carved top, set neck, etc matter.

I had a guitar that I considered a LP copy, it looked just like a LP (except headstock shape) but was bolt-on. A PRS is a single cut, yes, but NOT shaped like a LP. That's like saying a Telecaster is a Les Paul copy because it is a single cut guitar.

But let's just save time by saying that without a doubt the winner is gonna be Crusty's build!

IMO a PRS SC is most definitely a Les Paul copy...

What makes an LP an LP is the body shape, not the scale length or how many knobs it has...

Re: The ULTIMATE SDUG Les Paul COPY preliminaries

See, I personally consider a Dean Cadillac a Les Paul...

But, OK; The DEFINITIVE criteria for THIS competition:

Exact Les Paul Shaped body, or ONLY a single Variation (sloped shoulder, but correct horn, sharp horn, but correct shoulder, etc...)
24 3/4 scale
Mahogany/Maple or All Mahogany Body.
Three per side headstock.
Humbuckers ONLY
No specification on # and type of controls, or Bridge.

That gorgeous Blue B!tch is in like Flynn!!!!!

I'll make decisions on the fly if someone protests...

That works. There's always the Les Paul "inspired" options which can exclude some of the above and open it wide, like the alternate Tele thread. ;) My "copy" is excluded anyway due to it being a 25" scale and not mahogany.

Sorry to stir up a mess. :friday:

Hold the phone! LP's had P-90's for their first 6 years. How can any rational person exclude them??? :eyecrazy:This is preposterous! It's an outrage against decency and all that is sacred!
