Hey gi...

Do you mind me calling you gi?
I'm cool with it.

What was the most awkward or embarrassing moment you've ever had or seen?
There's been so many... like the time my guitar slipped off the strap button, and while trying to catch it, my hand caught a belt loop, and in the midst of an onstage neck-dive I almost lost my pants as well.

Or when I was leaving a goodbye note to my ex-GF after she dumped me ("I don't understand, but I still love you, I hope we can work things out", etc.)trying to slip it under her door and leave unnoticed, when she opened the door with just a robe on... and a male companion sitting on the couch.

Or during a bar gig, when everybody in the room bailed out to the parking lot, to watch a couple make love on the hood of a car. No tips that night!

Or when my brother walked in my room as a teen, at the worst possible moment...

I'm sure there'll be more as time goes by.

What is your favourite main course meal?
The one I don't have to pay for. *rimshot*

Seriously, I'm a carnivore. Beef, ham, chicken, turkey, fish, seafood. I love a good paella, and a good homemade authentic Italian meal goes well. Grilled food is fun too.

What is your favourite dessert?
My nana's xmas fruitcake. Laugh if you want to, but that woman worked in an industrial bakery in Brooklyn, and the kitchen was her domain. She brought it come holiday time. She and her daughter (my mom, both RIP) were old-school Southern cooks from the word go. Mom gave it a more modern approach, and reduced animal fats and sodium, etc., for health's sake, but you'd never know the diff.

At what time and condition are you at your most relaxed?
Afterglow.

How do you vent frustration?
I laugh at everyone giving me pain or frustration. It scares the **** out of them.

Where can you get a bass like yours?
If I could afford one, I'd grab it off the bay. They're on the used market for about $700-$1800 book value, depending on condition. Good luck finding one, though. Those that got 'em don't part with 'em easily.

What would be your top two tips for person who wants to play bass?
1) Develop hand strength; this is an instrument with strings up to 10x as thick as guitar strings, depending on the gauge.

2) Baby steps. Some guitar skills will translate well, others you'll have to adapt, and then again some things are unique to bass.

edit: I'll throw in a third -- have some bleepin' fun! Bass is spirit-moving and butt-shaking, both at once.

assuming you are old enough to have experienced the '80s, did you peg the cuffs of your jeans?

do you launder your pants after each wearing, or just when they start to get fonky?

and lastly, would you wear these pants?:

What's your beer of choice?
Haven't been a regular beer drinker for years (meds).

How do you feel about snakes?
They can live without me, and vice versa. They make very good belts, shoes, and guitar straps.

Bass rules. Not a question, just a statement I'm sure you'll agree with :D
Me like bottom!!

Favorite band?
Anyone who plays well, and has fun doing it.
I'm into funk, so Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, and Medeski Martin & Wood.

Favorite movie?
Blazing Saddles. "Excuse me, while I whip this out."

Clint Eastwood is cooler in A) the Dirty Hairy series B) Fistful of Dollars
Go ahead, make my day.

When my wife and I were first starting, I left her a phone message in my best Harry Callahan voice, parodying his "do you feel lucky" speech. She thought she had hooked up with a serial killer and panicked. After I calmed her down, she told me never to do that imitation again!

Favorite food?
See above.

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Good to see a fellow bass player in the Well!

Here's my questions:

1. Coolest bass you ever had the opportunity to play (not own, just play....)?

2. Tubes or solid state?

3. In spite of the weight, does anything really come close to the tone of a real vintage SVT?

4. Assuming you drive, have you ever brought an amp or axe with you when you were looking to buy a car to see if your gear would fit?

5. Best drummer you ever played with?

6. Drummer you wish you could play with?

7. How heavy is that LP bass of yours? My LPB-3 (mid-90s) sounds incredible but it's gotta be 12 lbs +......

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

What do you do for a living? I don't think I've read about that.

Did you start out on guitar or bass first? Was the transition all right, or did it take serious time to switch over?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Most important question EVER:

English, do you speak it?

Also, how much do you love Pulp Fiction?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Does Marcellus Wallace look like a biatch?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

English, do you speak it?
Yea verily, young sirrah, even unto my youth.

Also, how much do you love Pulp Fiction?
"Love" is too strong, perhaps, but it was quite thrilling. Samuel L. Jackson, Travolta and Willis!

I'm more into the Kill Bill's and Sin City, though.

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Describe your favorite pair of pants...
Comfortable, good-looking, current. I'm not a clothes horse, though. As the great philosophers once said:
Run DMC said:
Calvin Klein's no friend of mine, don't want nobody's name on my behind

what size pants do you wear?
See below...

do you prefer slacks or jeans?
Whatever the moment calls for; I wear denim much of the time.

where do you buy pants?
Big & tall catalog, for I am both.

assuming you are old enough to have experienced the '80s, did you peg the cuffs of your jeans?
No pegs, no porkpie hat, no goofy glasses, no rainbow suspenders. However, I did have some Cosby sweaters as holiday gifts, which are now keeping several homeless people warm in the greater New York area.

do you launder your pants after each wearing, or just when they start to get fonky?
Two or three times, then in the wash.

and lastly, would you wear these pants?:

supersweats.jpg
I would not wear them on the phone, I would not wear them all alone, I would not wear them in the street, I would not let them touch my feet. If you think I'm that much a fool, you ride the little bus to school.

Thanks, duke! Am I the first? that would be so cool...

1. Coolest bass you ever had the opportunity to play (not own, just play....)?
There's two: As a kid, for a few minutes, I played a blonde Guild Artist Award (semi-hollow) belonging to NY sessionista Gary King while the musicians were on a break. My dad was the engineer; he came in the room and said, "don't do that."

The second would be an Alembic Distillate, at the Sam Ash store in White Plains NY. The salesman snatched it out of my hands and said, "you can't afford that."

2. Tubes or solid state?
I was shopping for an amp once, and there was a Mesa Boogie bass head (model #?) that had switchable tube and solid state rectifiers. I'd switch to the middle position, and get both the warm blooming sound of the tube, and the crisp snap of the transistor. That was sweet.

3. In spite of the weight, does anything really come close to the tone of a real vintage SVT?
I had an SVT through twin 15's BITD. Monster! Nothing compares.

4. Assuming you drive, have you ever brought an amp or axe with you when you were looking to buy a car to see if your gear would fit?
When I get some car money, of course that will be a priority. Not just bass, but guitar and PA also. I don't care if it's a minivan; I need to bring the noise, get the benjamins and get everything home.

5. Best drummer you ever played with?
In terms of technique, DeBreyon McCoy (local guy, hangs out in Mayfield and Louisville also); regarding locking into a groove, my older bro (who shares the award with me when I'm multitracking my demos); in terms of swing, there's an older fellow my uncle knew, whose name escapes me (the drummer, not my uncle). We played a community center in Mt. Vernon NY once, and this man was workin' it like it was his last time behind the kit. For all I know, it may well have been.

6. Drummer you wish you could play with?
Bernard Purdie.

7. How heavy is that LP bass of yours? My LPB-3 (mid-90s) sounds incredible but it's gotta be 12 lbs +......
My wife got me an '03 MIM Jazz, and I use that for the bar scene stuff. The LP is for the mission-critical shows because it's a royal beast. It's so heavy, I have to do stretches between sets when I'm wearing that one.

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Did you start out on guitar or bass first? Was the transition all right, or did it take serious time to switch over?
Like many parents, my dad thought I should start on guitar before going to a bass. "Look, son, this one's better -- it's got 6 strings, not just 4!"

As far as work goes, my medical situation requires me to be on disability. :(

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

what made you want to pick up a bass? was there someone or something you heard on the radio or a LP one day which just made you say "sheeeeeeet, i wanna do that!!"

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

Does Marcellus Wallace look like a biatch?

Who ain't no language I ever heard of, do they speak English in Who?

Yea verily, young sirrah, even unto my youth.

"Love" is too strong, perhaps, but it was quite thrilling. Samuel L. Jackson, Travolta and Willis!

I'm more into the Kill Bill's and Sin City, though.

Fine choice indeed, and it shows by your previous reply.

*I really gotta stop watching those movies so much myself lol*

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

A few thought on the venerable vintage Ampeg Flip top Bass amps (b15 etal) please. I was offered one for 600.00 in fairlygood condition awhile back, but that was just too much dosh cause at the time I was on the hunt for a Marshall.Speaking of 'Marshall', was the "Major" used by bass players at all?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

OK...How long have you lived in Paducah?

Re: The Well Part XXIII (take 2): I'll get something right someday

So what do you REALLY think of Bootsy?
