Best KISS song?

Worst KISS song?

What's your favorite non-KISS band?

Best: Detroit Rock City / King of the Nightime World. I consider them one song, kinda like Heartbreaker / Livin' Lovin' Maid. You just can't hear one without the other. feels incomplete. There are a lot of great ones though - at least 20 just awesome songs.

Worst: Wow - so many bad tunes from Dynasty, The Elder, Unmasked, and the late 80's in general! I'll go with "Tears are Falling" because that's what happens when I hear that from the band that did the duo mentioned in the best category.

Favorite Non-Kiss: ABBA. I kid you not. The melody, the arrangements, lyrics, instrumentation, production, the voices. I love them. They are one of my "Desert Island bands" A band that if I had to live the rest of my life listening to only their catalogue, I could be alright.

Other non-KISS faves: Cheap Trick, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, REO Speedwagon, Blondie, Night Ranger, T'Pau, Def Leppard

I listen to a lot of things. I dig pop-country, I like a lot of classical, I love Blues (Gatemouth Brown, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray), I like Jazz (Coltrane/Davis/Monk/Wes and Fusion). I might listen to anything, and I like most of it.

How come you didn't answer my question?

regarding the above - It just slipped my mind. The well is a lot to keep track of it seems!

Back to the original question. You are diabolical jimmy. You knew that a 70's LP post would immediately incite TGWIF's vintage sensabilities. Knowing my feeling on those who take extreme stances - what else could one expect, with TGWIF and me a Norlin fan (when they work right). Your an evil genious, don't deny it.

So0o0o0, let me get this straight: you blame me for making you post about your hated for 70's guitars?

Re: The Well Part XXXVII - We're gonna turn the well over to Aceman - SHOCK ME!

I'd love to walk in someplace and say' I'm "DOCTOR" so and so..Thats got to be a trip. You ever get used to taht and peoples reaction?
Guess its a lot diffrent than me walking in and saying.."Hello, Im Joe Blow".
Its like .".give ol Joe Blow the seat near the bathroon, but make sure the Doctor gets 1st class treatmeant, after all, he IS a Man of letters... He cannot be a total stupid idiot, and likely hes very smart and possibly ,even probably smarter than me... Joe blow on the other hand may well be a stupid idiot, but in any case hes just another d-head like all the rest".
Thats kind of the way I look at it. Not that some people don't earn respect by the way they carry themselves and the qualities they posses, cause of course they do, "Carte Blanche" I guess is the term. I guess I myself seem more plebian than entitled, but i guess when noone knows who you are and wearing just wearing jeans out you get to see both sides of it. Theres a question in there somewhere. Thanks for a good well and for taking my few questions.

See, you are putting words in my mouth! I do not hate or love 70's guitars. Norlin LP's have a couple of bonus features that I like. Mostly the neck shape and material. You are a tricky one jimmy....

I rarely do that and it can have as many bad reactions as good ones. I typically reserve the title for people who are being real dilweeds. If you want to cop a tude, yo better be able to back it up. every now and again I bump into some yahoo with a chip on their shoulder who just has to try their best to make everyone else feel stupid and innadequate. That's when a careful usage of "well, during my PhD program, we studied various theories and applications regarding [insert topic here]. Consensus is that ....Oh - I'm Dr. Bob, nice to meet you."

A lot of people will automatically feel intimidated also. I cuss like a sailor and will drink just about anything. You might not know I'm Dr. Aceman if you didn't pay attention.

It's not really something I think about. I didn't get the degree to be able to say I had it. I just was just really interested in the subject matter. It can be cool on occasion, though. Mostly I know a lot about some stuff that there really aren't a bunch of people to talk about it with!

And while I'm educated doesn't mean I don't do stupid or foolish things either.

Here's one last favorite of mine:
Mrs. Aceman - "You are an @$$hole!"
Aceman - "That's Dr. @$$hole to you!"

Okay, so, if you don't love them, and if you don't hate them, how did you get into a fight with The Fire Guy?

Are you saying that I forced you guys to fight?

How hard was it to get your doctorate? How does it usually go in the US? How respected is it in the business world?

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say about an 8. The tough part was not the content of the work, it was the unbelievable amount of BS that surrounded it. The amount of time it takes really varies by degree. An MBA can be done in a year, but it's mostly more classes. A Neuroscience degree can take around 12 - but all you have to do there is understand the brain and create new information about how it works. The standard in my field was 6 or 7 years. There is the "myth" that it takes 4 years to get a PhD. I don't know anyone who did that - or it's rare. And some could be faster! as I said though - it wasn't the work - I really enjoyed that. The "Tenured Professor" is not a really accountable creature though. They tend to do what they do, for better or worse, and much of it is very self-foccused.

As for usually - not that there is one: Apply to program be accepted. 2 years to the master's thesis (written document). Then a comprehensive exam (although my "comps" were a review paper). The another two or three years of dissertation work. More classes at the master's level, more independent work for the dissertation.

It's respected anywhere, as only about 1/2 of 1% have them! That said it may or may not be taken seriously as it could have little to do with the topic at hand. My degree actually has a lot to do with what I do, so I guess it carries some weight. There is always the Theory vs application issue though. The idea that "Yeah - they are book smart but can they actually..."

It doesn't translate to massive amounts of cash. Masters is as high as you need to go there. One of the tough things for me to finish was that I realized the organization didn't care if I did that or not. They valued the skills I had - not the paper. So motivation to deal with BS was a big deal. My wife really helped there!

He took an extreme stance - I usually react to those sorts of positions.

and no - you did not force it.

Ok, thanks for the detailed answer!

The reason I asked is as I'm about to complete my masters's degree this year and I've been thinking if I should go for the PhD after it. I'd probably enjoy working on it but I'm not sure if it's preferable to other career options, especially if it may not pay for in the end. Although I'd love the fancy hat and the sense of accomplishment, the business world may be afraid of hiring me and may actually see me in a worse light like you mentioned about theory vs. application. The academic line of work, on the other hand, absolutely requires that I have the doctorate in order to work there. So I don't know yet.

Re: The Well Part XXXVII - We're gonna turn the well over to Aceman - SHOCK ME!

i have often been curious what it is like for folks trained and practicing in your field to interact with folks in the world at large given your ability to recognize ... ummm .. suboptimal behaviour ... on the one hand, i could imagine that you see the world thru the filter of your professional experience and can't help but 'diagnose' folks that you interact with for an extended period of time ... on the other hand, i can imagine that the amount of data is too overwhelming and you just have to go thru life going thru life without the extra step of analysis

and not just for yourself - do you have a sense of what your colleagues are like in this regard?

cheers

Could you clarify the boobie test for me? I remember it being mentioned in the past but can't remember what exactly it is....

Ah, ha! So I was right all along!

Do you know what that means?

Re: The Well Part XXXVII - We're gonna turn the well over to Aceman - SHOCK ME!

I still wait for your "LP" shred to compete any Superstrat shredder!
Will it come someday?:D

Are you trully a Doctor in your soul.Is there any day you just don't want to touch ,consult or get close to people?

Re: The Well Part XXXVII - We're gonna turn the well over to Aceman - SHOCK ME!

Do you have a picture of Ace Frehley next to your PhD? You know, to remind yourself of your roots? :D

Re: The Well Part XXXVII - We're gonna turn the well over to Aceman - SHOCK ME!

I am not a therapist, and am not trained in that field. My focus was on Cognition - skill aquisition, learning, problem solving, decision making. You'd have to ask Lesstrat for a good answer to that. That said...

I do know way more than the average bear, or even undergrad Psych major. I generally don't get to deep about people with issues. I generally consider them "wacky" "wingnuts" or just plane "broken/damaged." I can generally call a disorder pretty ccurately though. I really try to avoid people with issues. I mostly focus on the aspects of people I like (just like everyone else.)

I actually wonder sometimes how people survive without knowing this stuff. It makes it a lot easier to understand the how's and why's of people. Just really makes one a bit more accepting. Unless you are a total loon....
