There is something magical about a really good Strat

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

According to Blueman, it is called "herpes"...

But I know what ya mean :)

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

Yup. And there is something tremendously infernal about a bad one!!

Yeah I thought he would be posting something about how they suck, but I happen to have some really good ones. I played about an hour through my Shiva and my Komet and it was just what the Doctor ordered. It was exhilarating!

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

I used to love my strat. Then I got my 3 pickup tele with a mini-humbucker in the neck. I play it far more than my strat now.

Now that's just cheaty. I once played a not-so-good and off the wall import G&L Strat into a Bogner Shiva combo and that was the best tone I've ever had.
Bogner Shivas are the ****.

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

The underline is a really good strat. Too many bad copies out there, and even some genuine ones are bad strats. and oh yes and very important the right setting on the amps. Not ear piercing highs. I still am not very fond of the single coil in the bridge. I prefer HSS or HH config.

I'm thinking the amps you mentioned playing through probably doesn't hurt the tonal equation Dave.Especially the Komet!:laugh2: I haven't been on much, but hope all is well pal?

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

I've got a couple of good ones myself. Granted, both of them are partsocasters. One of them will be 20 years old this November. It has dual humbuckers. The other one I just assembled last summer and it's SSS.

Things are good John. I have a couple of new guitars coming picking up a Martin D18 historic today and I have a custom 335 being made by Brian Monty which I should have by the end of next month

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

I have to agree. I've gone 10+ years without really playing a strat, and all of a sudden, one day, I'm just bitten by the urge to have that feeling that I had when playing my dad's. I hunted down a MIM CAR Strat, picked it up and fell in love. I didn't even look at the guitar, I didn't see it... it wasn't until two days later I realized it had a rosewood fretboard instead of maple, and I didn't care, because it just felt, played and sounded so great. I've had this feeling before, but never over a strat, so it's definitely magic when you find a diamond in the rough.

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

ive been playing my maple neck hamer daytona with aps2/aps2/twangbanger setup thru my old deluxe reverb and red dot sunface and it has been keeping me very very happy

+1. Well said. A good one in the right hands is magic. They sound full and the treble's under control. Some guys can really dial it in. A so-so one, with a questionable amp setting, can be excruciating in the wrong hands.

Some guys just aren't man enough to play Fenders...

Very cool Dave....Glad to hear it.

Re: There is something magical about a really good Strat

I've been primarily a strat player my whole life, with a Gibson of different types thrown next to it.

One thing about wrangling a strat or tele into complete obedience is that it's almost a rite of passage. If you can't do it, you're not there yet. Elitist comment? Yeah. True? Yeah.

Choosing Fenders is an interesting topic, because within the constraints of being a strat, there's numerous feels amongst the feature sets. If you jump between Gibson and Fender, the American and Deluxe series has the right feel. If you're a die hard Fender player who understands the feel of maple 7.25" radius, you play it with a light touch most likely....and jumping to a Gibson is a bigger stretch feel-wise, but you have the Gibsons set up for a light touch as well.

Being a Fender/Gibson/vintage spec guy at heart, I try to adapt my playing to all the different strats, and find it funny that my fingers and brain tell me to play what I'm most used to. Everyone has their preconceived ideas of what strat they bond with, only based on what they've owned. I guess what I'm saying is that even players who hate 7.25" necks can get used to them if that's all they play for a few months.

Strats are an animal that needs to be tamed. Some go the distance with it like Hendrix, Vaughan, Johnson, Beck etc. Mastering a strat is a benchmark, most likely because it's the most pure electric guitar design. (only arguable with tele masters)

Teacups! Back in the '60s to the early '80s you played what Fender offered if you wanted a Fender. That's the old 7 1/4" radius and small frets. The necks got to have a very sharp shoulder in the early 80s which is why I got a Jackson. :)

That being said these days and owning some of the enhanced Strats/Teles, I don't really mind the old spec if the finish is well cured (not sticky) if a maple board - just takes a tad higher action. I do prefer big Frets, but refrets are far more attainable these days.
