There's just something about the 5150 sound...

That makes you want to destroy things with your picking hand. I got the AMT pedal that emulates the 5150 and that sound just destroys. It's like it has this huge wall of lower midrange and while at the same time keeping this presence that makes everything cut just right.

I threw my Bad Monkey in front, tuned my guitar to C, and the sound is inspiring. It's like Gojira, Carcass, and Amon Amarth are just within a slight twist of a knob.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

That's probably how a lot of the great modern metal left the 80s metal for dead. Low mids.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Yup, one of the best metal amps available, period.

Wish they made a low watt version with a nice clean channel :(

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I love my old block letter 5150.

But not for it's stereo-typical 'modern' metal tones, but for it's killer Hard Rock tones.

Think super beefed up Plexi / SLO type of crunch.

Yes, the amp can do fantastic metal, but for me, it is sooo much more than a metal amp- this amp can really do ot all.
And the best thing is, i actually LIKE the so-called crappy clean channel.

Very happy with mine, and it will stay with me for decades to come.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

yep. best rock/metal amp ive ever played. ESPECIALLY for the money!! it is the benchmark standard for me when i play different amps and I always come back to it. Ive got two 5150s. a block letter and the 5150II signature. both sound killer. Its so brutal sounding for metal but the thing that stands out is the responsiveness of the tone. It makes you play different than with any other amp. Its like your fingers just glide across the fretboard with ease. Harmonics, crunch, power, its all there. Hard to beat..

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Yeah the 5150 is bad-ass. I hear it in a lot of great metal bands but it also has a great lead sound that's great for anything from medium-saturated solo tone to super saturated solo tone. I have never felt the need to put a pedal in front of one, but if I did, it would be a Fuchs Cream because it cuts the bass well and accentuates the high mids just right.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

An old 2 channel 5150 is on my list of amps to get. I used to have a 5150 combo, but could never seem to get it to sound right. But every time I get the chance to try a head they sound great.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I have a love hate for the 5150. I love the sounds but hate that it gave me a case of temporary Tinnitus for almost a week.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I hear ya, I've been grinding an AMT P1 for a while and it captures the "beast that I wanna tame befriend and control until it doesn't want to kill me and when I'm on the saddle fcukin destroy anything in the way" feeling of the original 5150 amp :)

5150 was one of the best things that happened for an updated guitar tone, a mark of change.

Fellas, I don't want to hijack but it seems like many 5150 fans on this thread and this is a question I have wondered about --

Who do y'all think is the rightful successor to the 5150; the EVH line or the Peavey 6505 line (or neither,or something else)?

I use Mesas but I have been intrigued by the 5150 style amps.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

completely different amps and sounds

Just to clarify I am asking about differences between EVH and Peavey takes on the 5150 style amps; not trying to bring Mesa into it.

My understanding was that Peavey made the 5150 and then Van Halen took the name and rights to another company to make the EVH 5150; meanwhile Peavey rebranded the design as the 6505. So I am wondering which brand is considered the real successor to the original 5150 line.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

The EVH line is the successor. The 6505/6505+ is the same as the 5150/5150 II.

I had one back in fine early 90's. Great amp but heavy as hell. Wish I'd kept it though.

The preamp is based off a Soldano SLO and Mike used to mod Marshall's in the 80's giving them more lower mids. Just listen to RATT from Dancing Under Cover forward.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Well both the recto and 5150 have similarities with the soldano preamp. There are other things that make the different sounding. Eq and poweramp design mainly. So mm not completely different.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

:headbang: Every comment in this thread DELIVERS!!!!

As much as I'm digging all things Marshall these days, I have to agree. That sound just makes me want to make an album.

I may go back and forth from JCM800 tones, to Recto and whatever - but I always seem to come back to that 5150 sound.

Might as well just get one...

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

By the way - I am sick and effing tired of the clean channel smack on these things. If you are playing that amp on the clean channel, go home and have your granny make you some milk toast.

You don't b!tch about the rear seat leg room in an old Charger do you? NO - eff the rear seat. I'm DRIVING baby!!!!!!
