There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

The EVH line is the successor. The 6505/6505+ is the same as the 5150/5150 II.

This.^^ 5150 IS Van Halen. When the deal ran out with peavey he went with fender. More versatile amp. 3 channels and fender clean tone all in one amp. Peavey knew the design was bad ass so they ran with the same thing and called it the 6505. Peaveys version is still a great amp and offers the same thing as the old 5150s. Ive played both and cannot hear a difference. Havent played the 5153 yet but im probably about to pull the trigger on one. Its got fender cleans, plexi brown sound kinda tone AND full on assault in one amp! What more can you ask for?!

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Peavey is a poor mans Mesa.

It depends on what you're using it for, but I am inclined to disagree. It's only a "poor man's" version because it's far more inexpensive. But my 5150ii blows my Triple Rectifier away (for my applications). Not to mention they sound and feel like two totally different amps to me.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

So what is the 3120(?) Model? Is it just a 20 watt version of the 65s?

IIRC, the 3120 is either the old XXX in a different shell or the JSX in a different shell. I can't remember which one.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

By the way - I am sick and effing tired of the clean channel smack on these things. If you are playing that amp on the clean channel, go home and have your granny make you some milk toast.

You don't b!tch about the rear seat leg room in an old Charger do you? NO - eff the rear seat. I'm DRIVING baby!!!!!!

I play 5150s for the cleans and Fender Deluxe Reverbs for the the dirt. :D

Kind of like being disappointed that a Ferrari doesn't work very well for soccer-moms. Use the right tool for the job (assuming they don't mind going a conventional route).

So would you say the clean tone is LACKING, or just....sterile? Too mid-y? Like...why would the clean channel not be good enough to switch channels instead of amps?
I'm assuming its the clean channel that most 5150 equipped bands use in the quiet part of their quietLOUD, which does suck IMO.

Helps if I read the post right. Answer how thou wilt, but I aimed this question wrong. Sowwy.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I have the 5150 III and it makes me play better, it inspires me, and forces my fingers to fly. It's amazing how much a difference a really good amp makes

how are the cleans? worthy of the fender name?

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I have the 50 watt- the cleans are definitely Fender worthy, though in the 50 watt, though it is a 3 channel, you have to decide whether you want a combo of a Fender Clean and Searing Soldano type lead, or a Marshall and a Soldano. The shared eq on channel 2 prevents it from being a great 3 channel

I was joking.

I actually don't care that much for Fender cleans - too hollow/scooped sounding; I'm much more of a Vox guy.

that is precisely why I am going with the 100w. for that very reason alone. I dont need 100 watts but it would get on my nerves bad to not be able to take advantage of three separate and independent channels with their own eq and settings. Glad to hear that you enjoy the cleans, and the amp. cheers

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Actually many people solved the problem by using a Midi system like the Boss GT-100, Line 6 HD 500 or TC Electronics G System- that was the designer, Howard Kaplans suggestion- but he also said if you wanted 3 totally seperate channels to go for the 100 watt

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

Mesa build quality.

I do like mesas. I like the build quality a lot. I use mesa cabs. I want to like the sound but I cannot make friends with the high gain on those amps. Not one! Like I said in the OP. I would like to try a mark v head instead of just the cab to give me a better impression. I dont think i'll find much different in the gain than with say a double or triple rec. And I think the 5150 absolutely slays the mesa stuff in high gain territory. No comparison to me. But the mesa build quality is superb

Hey what's up man.

The next time you dial in a Mesa (but not a Mark) turn the master volume up to 12 o'clock and then turn each channel volume down to taste. It gets you where you need to be.

I wrestled with that for a long time and my local Mesa Regional Rep (Barry) told me about the master volume thing and I'm in ecstacy every single time I play now.

Also for the rest of the thread, right on brothers. The 5150/ 6505 is a really great amp and Bill Steer from Carcass uses one. I would have initially thought that the 5150+ would have been the amp of choice, but it looks like the original just has the sweet spot for voicings. Also...a relatively good buddy of mine played a 5150+ for years and years and always had a love hate relationship with it tonally and was always getting it fixed. I've never heard horror stories about technical issues with the 5150/6505.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

I love both my Recto and 6505.
The 5150 and most high gain peaveys are more akin to middle ground beween the Mesa sound and the Marshall sound. As in, the 5150 has a heavy midrange based crunch much like Marshall, but at the same time can sound insanely thick with copious gain and that slightly saggy feel, like Mesa.

Tidbit; The 6505 is named as such after combining the year Peavey started, with the year of the amps name change.

Tip; The 5150 technically has no clean channel. Rhythm and Lead only.
EVH liked for the amp to be quote, "Like a wild horse." Something that he constanty needed to be reigning in.
As a result, EVH would just roll back his guitars volume and sometimes switch to the smoother, lower output neck pickup using the amps rhythm channel for cleans.

My whacky Recto settings;
Channel 2. Modern mode. Thru Mesa Trad 4x12 w/ V30s. EMG's. 5881's.
Pres.10:00 Bass.7:00 Mid.10:00 Treble.9:00 Gain.3:00
No boosts or outboard tone devices.

Re: There's just something about the 5150 sound...

SLIGHTLY OT :

. . . can you sound guru's mention any bands who used 5150/6505's (ONLY) on their albums !

I know Black Stone Cherry used ONLY 6505's to record their 1st album, and you can deff hear it on the opening riff of 'Lonely Train'.

Any other bands that you care to mention - where these amps where the only units used to record with ???

Thanks Guys

I'm pretty sure Machine Head used 5150s for their early albums , they might still use them as far as I know
