Thick marshall head

I've decided that what I need is a fat sounding marshall head that will really contrast with my 1967 bassman head. The bassman is sparkling, bright and airy sounding, which is good. What I need now is a meaty, dark and rich sounding head that will fill up the room with mids and bass. I play mostly blues rock, but I'm also influenced by funk and jazz. I just want a fatter tone! Thanks

Re: Thick marshall head

Marshall JMP, should complament your Bassman pretty well. More along the lines of a vintage Marshall tone. Either that or a Jubilee.

Re: Thick marshall head

Get a Celtic Edana and be done with it, you will save money for additional toys too ...

I must be dumb because, not only have I never heard of those heads, I can't find them on the marshall website...

Well then .... Celtic Edana is a clone of JTM45 a classic marshall tone from the 70s and pre JCM 80s. Celtic amps is much respected forum bro, who's Edana is made of far better components than the quasi-Chinese Marshall line re-issue of JTM45. Ask around the people on this forum dont take my word for it ...

That's because they don't make them anymore.

The JMP was the forerunner of the JCM800. The JMPs wer 2204 and 2203 just like the 800s. The change came about after the Rose-Morris distribution deal ended.

JMPs are great amps, but you have to get them LOUD to get them to sound great. I sent my to Jeff Seal here on the forum and he made it into a beast with great tone at any volume.

Re: Thick marshall head

marshalls tend to be bright until they are roaring loud

Exactly. I'm not thinking Marshall when I hear "meaty, dark and rich". I just don't...not all 3 together. Meaty and rich, most definitely, but not dark.

Re: Thick marshall head

With the 2203/4 Marshalls rolling back the presence and pushing the mids fattens them up tremendously.

Re: Thick marshall head

ill hail for the speaking, but stone cold buttercup might what?

i almost always roll the presence off and keep the mids up all the way, bass too. but like erik said, marshalls sound meaty and rich but even with the presence and treble down i wouldnt call them dark. the .68 bypass cap keeps them from getting too bottom heavy

Re: Thick marshall head

i think a 2204 50w marshall could be a good match for what you are looking for, its just not that dark. its got killer mids and plenty meat to the sound and will contrast nicely to the 'sparkling, bright and airy sound' you get from the bassman

Re: Thick marshall head

Don't look at a jubilee. Amongst many bright marshall amps, this is probably the brightest. I'd suggest a JMP, or a JTM45.

If you can afford it, Bogner have a reputation for being on the fatter side of the marshall tone. Also try a 65 amp. Matamp's green reissue is pretty thick and brit sounding.

Re: Thick marshall head

I'd actually take a plexi/jtm over a bogner for a thick tone

channel jumping, bro. it's the key to thick skank butter tone
