Re: Thin brittle output
You apparently didn't read his post! Or at least not his entire post.
He gets thin/ice pick sounds in two positions of his DPDT switch and normal in the other position. This is clearly a wiring issue. Let me repeat that, in case you misunderstood...this is a wiring issue, not a capacitance issue with his cord or any other component.
If you truly want to be helpful that's great. That is what this forum is all about. And we welcome your comments and advice based upon your knowledge and experience. But you need to understand the problem before you can even begin to offer any helpful or appropriate advice.
I hear you and I appreciate the calm tone of your post.
There’s certainly a huge mutual misunderstanding above.
I’ve never said nor suggested that the problem mentioned by the OP was NOT a wiring issue. Nor that a “capacitance issue” was involved.
Therefore, my answers weren’t supposed to “compete” with those from other members.
When I’ve started a post by saying “time to jump on my hobby horse”, I was connoting my answer as being a subjective parenthesis, a kind of “footnote” or “side note”, meant to COMPLETE the whole picture with a different perspective.
I was saying to myself: “Well, if EVER it’s not
or not only a wiring issue, at least DR Ron has another idea to dig… and/or some other members might find this idea interesting too; who knows?”
The topic was apparently giving me an occasion to share a slice of my past experience with a “thin sounding” PG.
It wasn’t a good idea, since my contribution has been felt as inappropriate. That’s life: who can claim to be “the right man in the right place” in all situations? I should probably avoid dispersion between various forums, especially when I’m busy and tired.
I still think that disagreement doesn’t exclude mutual respect : depreciative words and vilifying connotations questioning the capabilities of a well intentioned member are really not necessary in such cases IMHO. Unless the real goal is to engage some “kung fu fighting”, of course. ;-))
Ultra-nasty, icepick-y thin sounds are symptomatic of parallel, out-of-phase interconnection of the coils of a humbucking pickup”
I had initially the idea to react to this sentence and maybe I should have started here. I’ve bought once a second hand two conductors Duncan pickup, whose coil wires had been swapped for some unknown reason (maybe by the previous owner, I don’t know)… I had to reverse the leads of one coil to obtain a normal series operation (as if I was twisting together red and black OR green and white). This reversed wiring couldn’t be detected with DCR measurements : only an inductance meter would make it obvious… FWIW.
