Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

Especially considering that's the price I paid in Canadian dollars too, so that's $142 US.
Lots of money left over to play with different speakers afterwards.

They are $129 US. I did look at those, great for the price, a little light though (that could potentially be a good thing?). Peavey also has a Greenback loaded 1-12 that is $299.

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

Hey everyone, a lot of good insights and feedback has been provided in this thread - thank you.

So, as my first step forward in this process, i would like to identify a single 8 ohm, minimally 70 watt 12" speaker to try out in a single 1x12 cab... and for that speaker to be tonally similar to the two speakers i am currently running together as a pair: a Celestion V Type and an Eminence no-name that came stock in a Jet City 1x12 cab that i already own. They are each 16 ohms, and i have been running them in parallel for a total load of 8 ohms in my Marshall 1960A 4x12 cab. What single 8 ohm speaker would be somewhat similar tonally, and again at least 70 watts?

EDIT: More details about that Eminence speaker... label says it is a JCA-12-1716. Also, the Jet City 1x12 cab model # is JCA 12S. In this older post about this Eminence speaker on the Harmony Central forum, a couple posters describe the tone as neutral but in a good way. I would concur based on my experience with it recently ... https://www.harmonycentral.com/forum/forum/guitar/acapella-28/1404523-

I really like my 2x12s, especially the vertical one. It puts the head higher and distributes the sound a little better.

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

They are light, but very resonant. I had to remove a G12T75 I had in it because it was too thick and too boomy. Vintage 30 sounds HUGE in it.

So you changed the speakers in them? Was wondering about the stock speaker, it is supposed to be a Blue Marvel but seems like I read that some had some other Peavey speaker in them. (of course, it is the interwebs)

I went with the Avatar, I've used their 2-12s in the past and was very impressed. Yes, considerably more than the Peavey, but very well made, solid cab with choice of premium speakers. It's also big for a 1-12.

I like the V30 a lot in a closed back cab, but it does a painful upper mid thing in an open back one.

That Avatar is a great cab. I get a few myself but they are too hard and expensive to get up here in Canuckland.

Yes I pulled the Blue Marvels out of the cabs and then sold them. They were too thin sounding for my taste and not aggressive enough.

First I put 2 x G12T75s in them but now have 1 x Marshall Vintage 30MF (which is a Vintage 30 with a bass cone) and 1 x WGS G12C, (which is a modern copy of a Vintage Jensen C12N)

Until recently, I had an Orange PPC412. It was amazing. It was also extremely heavy and would up being too much firepower for most of the gigs I played.

I sold it and acquired a PPC212 - the Orange 212 sounds better than most of the 412s I play anyway, and it's easier to move around, micing it up doesn't sound that different, etc... much easier rig to manage overall.

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

As some of you may have seen in my other recent thread here https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?332790-Recommendations-for-replacement-for-G12T-75-speaker&referrerid=19446, i just replaced the 4 stock G12T-75 speakers in my Marshall 1960A 4x12 cab. With more time spent with the 4 new speakers, i think i could easily be content with just 2 of them.

So, the most obvious option is to get a 2x12 cab. But more appealing at the moment, is the idea of buying two 1x12 cabs. I like the idea of being able to put one cab on stage left and one cab on stage right , thinking i can cover the overall room better. But, would that truly work out? I have read that multiple speakers arranged together "move more air" and so yield a better overall tone for the listener? Also, is there going to be a big change in the overall tone when changing over from a 4x12 to a 2x12 cab or two 1x12 cabs, assuming all cabs have comparable build quality? Another reason i like the idea of two 1x12 cabs on paper better than a 2x12, is reduced weight and bulk when it comes to transporting them around.

Also, what are some good quality 1x12 cabs that i should check out? Same question for 2x12 cabs?

Thanks

Sorry about having to update from your Teenage Giant Cab/Stack Dreams Kingswebe

Our backs and shoulders, our cars, and then our brains all reach this point at some point.... :lmao:

Not just gigging, I use my 1x12 and 2x12s WAAAAAAY more in the studio too.

So I don't think you are actually giving up much of anything by changing anyways.

Is this downsize mainly for recording, jamming, or gigging?
reason I ask is if it's mainly recording -I would recommend getting like a Vintage 30 1x12 and some big 70 or 75 speaker in a 1x12 or mix them together in a 2x12

Hey Negative Ease, thanks for the input and sorry for the late reply. I have been not been forum-ing as much in the last few weeks.

I should clarify: i wouldn't be getting rid of my 4x12, but simply adding a smaller cab for on-the-go jam session purposes. Currently, all i have is the 4x12 and after my back and i had an argument about it, my back won and forbid me from attempting to transport that 4x12 around ever again. Haha.

I described earlier that the tone i wanted to pursue for the new small cab, was based on a Celestion V Type + Eminence budget-type Legend comboed together like i have on the left side of my 4x12, but with more time spent playing the two pairs of speakers in that 4x12, i would now say the tone i want to pursue for a smaller cab would be something that approximates the sound of a Celestion G12-50 comboed with an Eminence budget-type Legend.

I may end up having to use two speakers, but first i want to see how happy i could be with a 1x12 cab plus the "right" speaker.

Question (for everybody): should i consider a 1x15 cab instead for a fuller sound?

A 1x15 can be fine depending on the tone you are going for. The G15V-100 Fullback is a classic sounding Celestion with fuller mids and more pronounced bass. It is not muddy in any way, it is very crisp and sharp sounding. It is great for your application but 15s are not everyone's cup of tea.

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

A big 212 with a speaker mix is very hard to beat. Avatar sig-cabs are $500 and you pick speakers/colors/grills/ohms/jack.
I suggest a celestion v30/k100 for an aggressive crunch, and anything but those for more subtle tones.

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

Nothing quite sounds like a 412. A 2x12 cab will never faithfully reproduce the level of sound projection and tone from a 412. But by design, a 412 is just impractical. Especially for gigging musicians.

I've owned a few 2x12 cabs over the years, and was never satisfied with them. Coming from 4x12's, they always sounded small, flat and beamy to me. But, what they make up for in practicality can supercede that in most cases.

Recently I've invested in two 1x12 cabs and have really liked the results. Together, they sound just as big as a 2x12 cab, but with better, more"3D" projection based on the different ways you can angle and position them. A gigging musician can also get by with one 1x12 in need be if the venue calls for it and if speaker and amplifier choice are appropriate.

I think being oversized 1x12 cabs helps too.

Thanks, but my main goal is weight relief and while yes a 4x10 generally weighs less than a 4x12, it isnt enough of a weight reduction for my goals. Also, i prefer the sound of closed back cabs over open back cabs. Also, i really like my current head, so i dont have much appetite for attempting to replace it.

Re: Thinking of downsizing from my 4x12 cab, recommendations/advice?

For a cab with mix speakers, Yamaha has the THRC212 with the Eminence Legend1218 and the Tonker 12 drivers.
