Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

Re: Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

depends how you're liking the other aspects of the jb,,,,,,,like are the lows big and/or tight enough?

Re: Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

Yes, Alt 8, PATB-1 or simply try a rough-cast Unoriented A5 mag in the JB...seriously

Re: Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

Now if the neck and bridge share the same pots in the ESP, lowering their value will also affect the tone of the neck pickup. Another solution, if going that route is to simply load the JB with a resistor: anywhere from 180k to 510k depending on how close you want to get to making it behave as if it were connected to a 250k volume and 250k tone pot, though the bass will be a bit lower because the load from a real 250k tone pot is different because it's after a cap.

But again, I recommend an A2 magnet swap as a first tweak before doing anything else.
Aha my speaker in the DSL40C is celestion seventy 80. What would happen if I swapped with the A2 magnet though?

Re: Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

The econo bargain bin Seventy 80: sigh. That's what I suspected. Get a decent speaker. There are lots available. From Celestion I would first look into a Vintage 30 since you like Slash; then a G12M-65 Creamback or a Lynchback.

The JB2 is commonly discussed. Have a look.

Once again, as with the 12M-70, I just don't get the hate for the 70/80.

Invader is totally out though right? Since I play metal aswell I don't feel that I could really play it with these vintages.

You might need to see an audiologist to find out the extent of your HF loss. I'm not joking.

Or I might just take advantage of the fact and aquire speakers for less.
Personally, I think that the Vintage 30 is overrated. Far too much mids.

Re: Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

So you would have preferred the clip the OP linked more had the speaker not been a V30. Fair enough. V30s are polarizing, yes, but Seventy 80s are just plain junk.

There is no pickup or magnet that is going to fix that horrid high end once you add gain. The OP wondered why clips of JBs could sound so good. Answer: there wasn't a Seventy 80 in the signal chain.

The last time I played a DSL40C I thought it sounded like garbage. I knew better than to blame the amp so I had a look at the speaker and wasn't surprised.

The good news is that I may be able to sell my Jet City 2x12 vertical slant cab that is now housing a pair of Seventy 80s after all.

Wow - NOT digging a lot of the advice I'm seeing here! I think one issue is that the OP wants a couple of different tones. Always a problem. Plus, the OP didn't say how he uses which pickup.

Before I go all pup swap crazy I would suggest trying an A8 or an A2 JB first.
The 250k pot is also an option.

I think we understand your JB issues though.

Now - the Custom, recommended by many is NOT what I would call a warmer pup. It is absolutely a ceramic screamer on the highs. As is the Distortion, Black Winter, etc....These pups scream, shriek, wail. But they are not, IMO warm at all. The custom may seem warmer because it has a classic PAF tone curve and some serious bass. But - I'm not playing Sweet Child on it....

Lets suggestion of the 59/Custom might be a little better. (Regardless of what Lew plays).

I wonder if what OP really needs is like a Slash in the neck, and a 59 custom in the bridge or something like that.

I said it before and I'll say it again: there is no pickup or magnet swap that is going to fix the sound of a Seventy 80.

Just one example, which I find representative of the Seventy 80. You can find demos which include V30s as well as others.

Now I suppose that I can understand why some don't like the 70/80. But for my purposes, which would best be represented by the "7-string lead" section of the clip, it's perfect. Admittedly, many don't like the style of metal that it's best suited for, but that's why I said "one man's poison..."
Of course it also helps that I have two of them in an X pattern with two Randall Jaguars in a 4x12. The Jaguars add a bit more mids to the mix.

Seriously checkout the JB with an A2 mag. Sweetens it up a little but it's still a JB. Mag swaps are easy, only take a few minutes and you get that felling of accomplishment of learning something new. Then you can be yet another mag swapping jack@$$ pushing mag swaps on people that just want to spend $$ on new pickups. " one of us, one of us..."

Or maybe checkout the invader. It's what the guy in A7X uses and use your neck pickup and/or the tone control for the Slash type stuff

Re: Thinking of switching from JB to Custom? (ESP Guitars, Bridge, Lead tone)

On a side note, has the op considered changing V1 in the marshalls pre amp? I have never found the stock marshall tubes to be that good esp under heavy gain. How does the same guitar sound through other amps,,,,,,,,,,try taking it along to a store and trying a few different models, it could work out a lot cheaper with a lot less hassle if a simple valve swap improved its tone.

I'm totally with you on not understanding the G12M-70 hate... But the G12T-75 and the 70/80 do the same displeasurable thing to my ears.

Scope out the WGS Invader 50. It's a higher-wattage Greenback voiced speaker.

Of course, this is the beauty of not having to settle for "one size fits all". We all have different tastes. With pickups or speakers etc, find a combination that suits yours.

I don't see how trying different amps would warrant a V1 change.
