This is what I'm getting my girlfriend in a few months

Ok, after I spend a week de-comping in wisconsin this summer, I'm'a work like mad (when I'm not playing guitar or videogames) and try to make as much money as possible (enough for gas, a POD and this, hopefully), then, for my girlfriend and I's first anniversary, I'm going to buy her this:

She's been going on E-bay and looking at basses and stuff and telling me what she thinks looks cool, so recently, we ended up at hix bros music and I played some basses and asked her which ones felt cool to her and had her hold them, she liked the Mustang. So, I'm gonna buy it for her and strike a deal with her that I can play it at shows when I want.... cuase, I actually want a mustang bass, but she's gonna get mine... poo...

Rockin man...get a vintage one for "vibe" points and keep rockin.

Aren't those things short-scale? Do they feel very different from, say, a Fender Jazz bass?

Ditch the girl and keep the guitar! Trust me, you'll be better off.

Indie,

That's really cool and well done for thinking about her. Yes the mustang is short scale but you must not forget that womens hands are smaller so getting a full size one might just be a problem (ask Boylanjones).
However have you thought about getting an active bass which might suit both of you (they have got thinner necks) and will be easier to play?. Makers like Yamaha, Ibanez, Aria do all these and they are usually 24 fret and are easy to play.

NOOOO!!!! You're right! but, I'm not gonna listen.

Anyway... active basses don't suit my needs in the least bit. They sound... sterile to me, no matter what you do to them. As for the smaller neck, I prefer larger necks. And a full size bass is a bad idea with her, cuase she's tiny. The mustang is my best choice for her.

I thought for sure you were talking about a vibrator.

Seriously, all jokes aside, go for it. I play bass and although I hate short-scales with a burning fiery passion, I will admit they are well suited to smaller people.

As for the girl vs. guitar debate.... why not the best of both worlds? The best girlfriend I ever had played guitar. I miss her a lot... especially given the fact that girls who play are so few and far between. She was cool for many, many reasons but the fact that she was better than I was only made her that much more attractive. Nothing's sexier than a chick who plays, so enjoy having a cool girlfriend while you still can. The world is full of psycho bitches... if you can manage to find a girlfriend that's cool and enjoys good music, then hang on to her.

Smart man, buy the significant other something that you actually want for yourself. Someday, you'll be buying her gas grills, golf clubs, and power tools for her birthday. :laugh2:

That is a nice bass though, I think she'll really like it.

Iv been a guitarist for 10 years, but have found a liking of playing bass in my last 2 bands, I think the guys are less threatened...hehe

I had a fender jazz bass, and yeah it was a bit big, it used to drill my shoulder and usually had to sit down at practice and just put up with a sore shoulder after gigs. I traded it in for a ibanez SG which is much more practical for me. I then got the 5string model which still is more comfortable than the fender. The ibanez was also easier for me to get my hands around and slap, im not tiny (170cm), but weight is a real issue for women not just the size of the fretboard.

I didnt really go for tone as bass is not what I spend most of my time playing, but the SG's dont sound that bad.

And your girl is a lucky woman ....

My ex bf and me were together for 2yrs, he had so much gear ...jcm tsl head/quad, array of effects, gibson nighthawk, sold them all to other people at dirt cheap prices. I asked him if he would wait till i saved up some money to buy them off him but he sold em anyway....

No anniversary pressies...but he did sell me his paf pro pup for $40 once

.....A guitar (or even a strap/effect or cd) is the best present ever, your girl will be stoked

Re: This is what I'm getting my girlfriend in a few months

getting long scales is not always bad for small people. my girfriend the other day bought one of those ibanez neck throughs. its full scale and she is only 4'9" (btw she is 18).

and that same day she bought be a 97 washburn j9 and some new duncans for it too.

I always thought that the mustang was one of the coolest looking basses, and they've got a cool feel too. Tina Weymouth played one (with a huge DiMarzio pickup on it), and so did Richard Hell.

Ok, this is gonna sound harsh, but I think its a stupid idea. Why? You've known her for a year, and you gonna buy her something that cost about half as much as an engagement ring. Unless you know your gonna marry her, your blowing alot of money. It's all up to you, but I wouldn't even consider something that expensive.

You can get a new Fender Mustang Bass for around 450 to 500. There are engagement rings that cost 3 to 5 thousand. I think your math is a bit off.

Guitar players spend thousands upon thousands of dollars selfishly on themselves without even giving it a second thought. Guitarists max out their credit cards in the ever-pointless quest for tone. Yet spending money on your permanent girlfriend is a BAD idea?

If he had said "I'm going to completely squander 500 bucks on myself for no apparant reason other than my own greedy whim", you would have said "Yeah, dude, go for it!!" If he buys it for his girlfriend, then it's a bad idea??

If you think 500 bucks is a lot to spend on a woman, you've never been married. After the divorce and settlement go through you're out HALF YOUR WORLDLY POSSESSIONS. I can't possibly imagine buying this girl a bass could be as stupid as getting married.

Have you ever had a girlfriend? They're really damn expensive. 500 is a drop in the bucket. The good ones are worth the time, money and emotional investment. Besides, some things are more important than cash.

techinally his math isnt off. there are engagment rings that start at 69.99. granted there made from subpar material and are from walmart. but i do agree with you 500 is nothing if you are gonna be with them long term.

good luck with it man.
