This PRS Opeth is doing my head in!! Argh...

Re: This PRS Opeth is doing my head in!! Argh...

Cheap in the Americas maybe but in Europe it's quite expensive, around 80 euros in Europe.

what rip off!!!... around here it's like half what they would charge you for setting up a guitar

Re: This PRS Opeth is doing my head in!! Argh...

around here, a set up it's like 30 us dollars, and a bone nut installed to which ever string gauge you want... like 15.

just out curiosity, how much for a set up in your location?

In Chile it's $15 for a new nut installed by a tech?

Re: This PRS Opeth is doing my head in!! Argh...

Getting a new nut costs about 50 Euros here in Italy.

HTH,

Re: This PRS Opeth is doing my head in!! Argh...

I got quoted 80 euros here in Luxembourg for one.

It take's them like 30 minutes tops, the bones they get em for free at any slaugher house, they just have to boil it and theyre good to go. sometimes they'll even throw the bone nut for free if they did something big to your ax, maybe refretting or something, Luthiers HATE plastic nuts. It's pretty much the cheapest job they do.

I usually get em from the same luthier that made my main ax ( check profile and avatar) when I change string gauges

Yes it is.

A full setup, including a new nut, and a refret, should go for around $100, maybe a bit more nowadays.

Re: This PRS Opeth is doing my head in!! Argh...

Meh I got tired of it. My friend was pretty happy with what I did even though I felt horrible I couldn't do more.

1) shaved off about 3mm off the top of the nut to better expose the nut slots
2) widened the slots for the new strings (12-54s)
3) polished the whole thing (nut files, then 1,000, 1,200, 1,500, 2,000 grit sandpaper and finally steel wool). The nut is VERY soft and a string rubbing on it will ruin your polishing job...
4) wired two new pickups (DiMarzio Liquifire and Crunchlab... not bad)
5) tried to do a decent setup but the nut is way too high. This guitar badly needs a pro nut. She sounds sweet as can be too, just needs that one little piece of bone...
6) the usual fretboard/guitar cleaning, steel wool polishing of the frets and board, blablabla

Good learning experience and a few construction issues with this guitar. A pro setup and especially nut and she can be killer though.
