Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

Almost a year ago, when I got my Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 18, I was looking for a lunchbox head with variable wattage, two channels fx loop, and a gain range from angelic to satan.

Out of everything available on the market, only three options were available to me and of the two that were within my price range, only one of them sounded good to my ears. The one that failed in the final shootout was the Engl Gigmaster 15W head. While it all sounded good on paper, in person I just could not jive with it. There was something very VERY strange about its voicing in the mids and I couldn't get along with it.

So I went for the tubemeister, because it was also half the price of the 3rd contender, the Engl Ironball. The other thing was that I never got a chance to play the ironball since no dealers around where I was carried them.

Well I moved since then. And today I got a chance to play the Ironball. I played it through a cab loaded with Vintage 30s. Here's the rundown:

2 channels
Variable power - 20W/5W/1W/Silent
balanced line out
fx loop
global gain boost
global master volume boost
global reverb (not spring reverb, but it sounds quite nice and rich)
footswitchable channels/gain boost/volume boost/reverb.
Also has a headphone jack!

Definitely goes from lush, pristine Fenderish cleans to a decidedly snarly, crisp, searing high gain that retains articulation - Classic Engl high gain sound. But (and this is what surprised me) - it's WARM, BEEFY, AND REALLY TIGHT - I wasn't expecting that at all from an EL84 amp. The other thing is it's got 4 12ax7s. 4 gain stages in the first two tubes plus tube driven fx loop and the phase splitter. The gain is so much more organic and natural and just plain no complaints compared to the high gain sounds of my tubemeister, which has 2 12ax7s, yet it somehow capable of the same relative amount of gain (though the Engl's gain sounds infinitely better).

And bless their hearts, they oriented the transformers on the chassis to prevent any extra noise.

It's a little beast of an amp. Lately I've been considering potential replacements for the tubemeister, or at least researching my next amp. I was kinda set on not getting another el84 amp because I miss the sound of big bottles, but now I'm not so sure. The Ironball really kills.

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

That sounds awesome. How loud would you say it can get both clean and dirty?

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

pretty friggin loud.

easily loud enough to play with a band.

Same deal with the tubemeister. 18W is plenty loud for gigging. What matters more is the amount of air you're pushing with those watts though. A 4x12 is gonna give you more power/oomph and volume on stage than a 1x12.

Running through a 4x12, even in 5W mode the ironball and my tubemeister would probably be fine for gigging. Though I've only ever used my tubemeister at 18W for gigs cuz I prefer the extra tightness from the relative headroom increase. Didn't even need to turn up all the way. I think the last gig I used my tubemeister I was turned up only 1/3 of the way, but I was going through a mesa 4x12.

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

I love love love ENGLs. Most people think they are only for metal but they are pretty damn versatile.

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

If I could swing a retro50, And the volume, i certainly would have one.Engl makes good stuff.

That said, N/OS preamp tubes in the TM18 made a massive difference in girth/beef and quality of tone. Thicker without anything nasally. Much more natural top end.. does something to smooth out all that diode fizz. Before it sounded like an inexpensive high gain MIC amp. Now it has a very professional quality tone to it.

Worth a try IMO, its still cheaper than a new amp, and you can use them in any other amp down the road.

All THAT said...iffins a new amp is what ya want cos you need something new, then go for it!

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

I played the Retro 100 some time back. Can't say I was terribly impressed with it. It was a lot darker and rounder than I'm used to hearing from Engl, and I found myself fighting it a lot and not being able to get that doofus wide grin on my face that a lot of other engl amps are capable of giving me lol.

As for the TM, thanks for the tip. I'm in need of new power tubes anyway.

Are you using NOS el84s as well as 12ax7s? I currently have an NOS 12au7 in v2 which isn't going anywhere, and a tung sol new production 12ax7 in V1. Power tubes are currently the stock shuguangs, but I had a set of Tung Sols (again, new production) in there before one of them failed, and they sounded really good.

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

I am using the Mullard RI..new stuff, by New Sensor for the EL84s. Ihave an original Mullard12ax7 inV1, and a NOS Jan5751 inV, courtesy forum BroTO.. I am on the hunt for some good NOS EL84s.

But hey,I prefer big bottles.too. I have the TM18 because it fits my needs, not my wants ;)

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

I have one and like it alot. I just swapped out the stock tubes with some JJ and now i just love the amp!

Re: Thoughts on the Engl Ironball.

The specs are so much more appealing than the Gigmaster, which obviously has some solid-state stuff going on. I'd really like to play both, but I've avoided looking for new amps for a while. What I have is good enough, and, as we all know, every guitarist is happy with "good enough."
