Tighter JB?

Looking for a tighter JB with all those juicy high mids and maybe more high end. Not really looking for a duncan distortion. What are my options?

Re: Tighter JB?

Duncan distortion neck and swap out the ceramic for your choice of Alnico. Apparently the distortion and jb are the same wind, so you'd be getting just that, a tighter jb!
Distortion neck is like an underwound Custom. Just put a regular ceramic into the JB. Dokkenbucker. Thank me later.

Re: Tighter JB?

Distortion neck with the stock ceramic is tight & bright, a different wind than the Distortion bridge and more open sounding. Used to be sold as a bridge pickup called the Seymourizer.

But I bet the JB with a ceramic as Demanic recommended would be a real firebreather.

I think the Aldrich is well worth checking out too. Though I think the output would be a little lighter than a JB, the pickup has a good reputation.

is there any difference is doing a DD with an A5 magnet vs a JB with a ceramic?

I'm looking into the Aldrich, the Jason becker isn't what I'm going for- though he was a FANTASTIC player.

Re: Tighter JB?

Aldrich is hotter than the JB and has less top end, so if you're looking for more, that's probably not what you want.

The Distortion Neck is not the same as the Distortion Bridge. The Distortion Bridge and the JB are very close (many believe identical) winds.

Tighter JB with more top end = Standard Ceramic magnet (not double thick like the DD) as Demanic said.

You might like the Full Shred, also

Re: Tighter JB?

The Distortion and JB are not the same wind, similar, but not the same.

That said, what you want, OP, can be accomplished with a ceramic mag swap and by trimming some length off of the screws. The ceramic mag will give you more top end, should tighten the lows, although you'll also wind up with more mids. Shorter screws tighten up the lows. You might try the screws first if you're concerned about getting too many mids with the mag swap.

So...

Listening to YT soundclips, I can tell you that the DD is not the direction I'm heading. I found the Ardrich to be more dynamic. I've had both pickups in various guitars at some point, but its been a while. I remember the suhr having tons of top end, but that was it. But in clips, it does seem to have JB-esque singing high-mids. I also took a look at the BKP Rebel Yells and they're also not the direction I'm headed, but I've heard them get recommended before as JB-esque.

I've done mag swaps before. I've done the JB8, JB2, Custom Custom with A2,5, A8 and ceramic mags. The CC8 for example, could sound cool, but it had too much output which compromised pretty much everything and dynamics just weren't there. The JB2 I didn't like. I'm no expert, but the A2 magnet took away those great upper mids and replaced them with lower mids (I can dial in the lower mids on my amps). The JB8 was more of the same, and had more output. I've done the the ceramic swap into a JB before and it actually was more DD-esque than I wanted. I was actually going to experiment with a Demon 8 in the future. The demon is my favourite duncan pickup. I've never done a pole swap. While I have some idea how different magnets affect tonality, I have no clue about poles??? Where do I get said pole pieces?

Am I just better off contacting the Duncan Custom Shop?

What's the difference between a "Custom Custom 5" and a Custom 5?

The Custom Custom ceramic and a Custom?

Honestly, I couldn't tell ya. It started life as a CC. Then I swapped in a bunch of magnets over time. Eventually, I settled on an A8. It was cool- a screamer of a pickup, but just had the kind of these fuzzy-esque dynamics. Like there was too much output and it muffled things. I thought reducing the output would be the trick and so far its been good. the CC has an A2 magnet in it now. Its in the bridge on my SG.

Re: Tighter JB?

I've heard the Alt 8 described as a tighter, more muscular JB, but I haven't been able to try one myself yet.

Re: Tighter JB?

Isn't it good enough to say that they are similar?
