Time for a new wah (again)

Replaced my scratchy old CryBaby with an Ibanez Weeping Demon Jr. about half a year ago. But I'm not really bonding with it. I've found I barely use wah anymore because of it, so it has to go. So who shall be next contender to the throne?

Lots of good stuff out there, but the WDJR did have two things going for it: optical drive instead of pot + treadle and step-on, switch-less activation. I DESPERATELY want to stick with those features, because holy hell that is awesome. Closest thing I know of is the full-sized Weeping Demon, but the sheer mass of it makes me reluctant.

Is the issue the tone?

Crybaby 95Q for "normal" Crybaby tone, Morley Tremonti for modern tone.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

Yes. It works alright playing clean, but sounds thin with distortion. Also, has a weird hump about three quarters of the way up where it gets really thin and basically distorts the signal.

I have a 95Q....I love that it's switchless....hate that it's not true bypass. It does horrible things to my Quickrod. Lol
I went with the Crybaby Classic. Hardwire TB and it sounds unbelievable. No tone suck.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

First brand that pops into my mind when optical switching is required is Morley. Check out their range if possible and see if you like their tone. ;)

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

I also have a Bad Horsie 2. It does have optical switching....pretty sure it's not TB. But it's footprint is ridiculous.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

Since you seem to be based in Europe, I suggest a MXR CAE404 (two wahs in one-red Fassel and Yellow Fassel) and a G-Lab True Bypass Wah Pad. Place the wah on top of the pad, connect it all and place it on your chain where you want. The pad has its own in/out, and you can leave the wah on, and it will only enter the chain if you press on it.

G-Lab is a polish company that develops high-end effect and loopers, and the above set will cost you around €350, but for sound quality and practicality, there's no match on the market.

Kind of a pricey option. The stock MXR 404 is a pretty versatile wah, as is the 535Q. Used ones are affordable, at least in the US.

Has the OP looked at the Billy Duffy Cry Baby?

Blueman335, americans are really lucky, in my country, Portugal, second hand gear is hard to find, even more if one's looking for something special...

Yeah, seems a bit excessive for my level.

I have not. I should, though, I love the Cult.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

Check out the John Petrucci wah, too. It's basically the Dunlop rack wah in a regular wah casing, along with all the adjustability. It has trim pots inside on the circuit board so you can tweak all the parameters.

Bad Horsie 2 is a great wah. It's optical and doesn't have a switch, but it's not true bypass. They talk their buffer up a lot, though. I love mine.

I still have mine on my Marshall board. Their buffer is worlds better than Dunlop's imo. Dunlop's is pretty crappy actually.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

I have an early 80s Crybaby, so I've been through a wah search. I am currently using the highly tweakable sound in a Fractal multi-effects (Line 6 makes a nice range of wah models in their M-series, too). I am also going to try to score a Parachute wah, which has a really huge wah-ness to it...Tony Iommi uses one, I'm told.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

Indeed they were. There weren't a lot of choices...remember the DOD wah? Yikes...

My 80s Crybaby has been through 3 pots since then, and is nicely real-world relic-ed, and keeps on going,

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

I still have my first wah as well. Early 90's though. It really needs to be rebuilt at this point. I keep meaning to do it, just for the learning experience but yeah....it's been collecting dust for years now.

Re: Time for a new wah (again)

I actually swapped the pot in my old Crybaby once. Was an original part, stamped Dunlop. Still didn't fit properly. For some reason the diameter of the flange was slightly larger, so it would squeak like a bastard and was still noisey as all hell.
