Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

When Weber first went into business,I put a set of the ceramic 12s into my Pro Reverb..Those speakers have been in my amp all these years..The oxfords that were in my amp I hated..

Dave, personal amp in think. I'll probably run the Red Fang and C Rex first. Then I'll likely get two Webers for long term.

fang and rex. Hell nice.
fwiw i had a pair of weber californias. They are bright and loud if that is the model you are considering. Good if thats what you want, but i prefer cannabis rex any day of the year.
Consider a pair of texas heats too if you would like plenty of speaker headroom, but a little less efficiency. Nice and thick.

I need to check on what model Webers are in my Pro Reverb, but they have been great speakers tonally!

Can't remember when I put these in my Pro Reverb but this is whats in there..

I've got a THD cab that sounds righteous with my Vibrolux Reverb - Those should be Classic 80s, no?

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

the calis are great, as are the JBL's they are modelled on. But the super loud, super clear sound is something more useful in the era of when we needed our amps to be super loud and clear. I'm not saying they are anything less than excellent at what they are built for, just that that purpose is less useful to me than something that can sound warm at lower volumes.

I run pedals through my Pro Reverb anyway...I've loved these Webers since day 1 in my amp!

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

yours look like some kind of jensen c12n clone rather than the calis which are a jbl clone. different beast altogether i guess. Yours look way cool.
I'm jealous of pro reverb owners btw. The are rare as hens teeth here in Australia.

I think you are correct? They must be from around 04/05 time period from my research..I have the receipts, but easier to look it up on the net..I bought my BF Pro Reverb off some old man for $50 back around 1989...It is and has been my main gigging amp ever since..Mine is a 66 model...I have not only maintained it,but have done some stuff to it over the years also..The guys in our band prefer this amp over any of the amps I can use..Even over my old NMV Marshall..LOL

I Love these speakers...This amp sits perfect within the context of our band..Not too midrangey, nice warm, full tones! Just a great amp..

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

This was sort of a test bed for some things early on before I started or right as I got started making amps. Things were crumbling inside, literally, when I used a chop stick looking for noise. I got busy doing other things, started building for others, didn't really ever get back to it in earnest until this week. It'll probably end up with webers in it at some point.

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

I must ask...were the old Mallorys bad??

some burned looking, some sort of crumbling, resistors crumbling much worse. I yanked most of that out a long time ago. And I was probably a bit too naive and aggressive when I first got my hands on it, truth be told.

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

I also finished a Princeton reverb circuit but with 6L6's and Heyboer super reverb transformers. Not quite tweaked out enough. I stuffed it into a JTM45 chassis and drilled out an extra hole for a fourth preamp tube. Again, something I started a long time and let sit there.

Gotcha

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

i used a g12h in my old deluxe reverb and it sounds great. the rex/red fang combo might be sweet

There really is something to Celestion speakers with Fenders. It might seem like blasphemy, but the 10'' Golds in my Vibrolux Reverb and the mix of G10L35s/G10N40s in my Super Reverb are quite nice. While I don't own a Pro Reverb, I have used G12H30s before and as long as you don't need tons of clean headroom, I think you'll be quite happy. If you want a more "efficient" speaker, I'd highly recommend a 12'' Celestion Gold pair.

the g12h30 and celestion gold are the same efficiency rating and the g12h is much beefier sounding.

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

Well I'd rather use what I have. Those Mojo clones are great bang for the buck.

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

Speaker queries are "bad" enough...I will not even comment on the colors/types of caps used.
With that said.....I always thought the Weber F-150 and the Emi Texas Heat and RW&Blues were good speakers for a BF/SF Fender.
The Pro Rev was a cool amp.
good luck

those mojo clones are really nice, at least the old one i have is

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

Frank F'ing Lee has Weber Californias in his '66. One paper, one aluminum. Not by design, but by de$ign (used).

His amp was making a funny sound until He replaced the OT with that of a 66ish Bassman. AFAFLK, that is a common mod and it does sound nice. He also had the trem taken out of the circuit (turns on via one of the knobs), reverb on both channels, and the other channel modded to add more midrange. Avec un box de la A/B, c'est un deux channel beauty.

Frank Lee wishes he had the JBLs, as that's His holy grail. Doth Weber not make a supposedly more authentic JBL clone now? Anyone try same?
Thank you.

Several years ago I had to put a Hoffman(Bassman) OT and a PT in my own 66 Pro Reverb...Helped the amp alot..

Re: Time to tear into the Dripedge Pro Reverb (speaker question too)

that would be the california. Yes tried in my twin reverb. Nice speakers for sure.

The word on those are to go with the Chicago if you can't handle the highs of the Cali or JBL.

There are so many great speakers out there.

A Celestial Lynchback just arrive. I'm going to put it into a cab and break it in for my friend. Report to follow.
