It depends.
If it's at your school or something, you need a nice mix of talent and entertainment value. For most audiences, the right mix is 70% entertainment and 30% talent. They don't care how perfect your solo was, but if you bore them to tears you won't win anything.
If it's at a bar or club, don't even show up: that's how you win. The people who make it further through the competition are basically getting tricked into playing for free.
