To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

Do you keep kinda weird hours or live on the other side of the world? Every time I wake up stupid early in the morning, you're on!

I get up at 5am weekdays and around 7am, maybe a little later on the weekends...most days I leave to go to work at 6am but this week jobs have been a little closer to home so I've been leaving around quater to 7, maybe 7 but I still get up around 5 maybe 5:30 just to stay in check.

I'm in Atlanta, not that far from you so...I ask you, why are you up this early?! HA!

:D I've just have weird sleep patterns the past week or so. But Wednesdays, I go in to work at 7:30, so this isn't TOO much earlier than I'd normally be up.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

I had an old Jazzmaster, I blocked the trem and put a humbucker and split coil switch in it. It was still crap. :)

I'm not a fan of them at all.

What's the difference between a blocked Jazzmaster with a humbucker and a blocked strat?

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

I never got strat tones out of the Jazzmaster, I had a strat too. I always felt the guitar had no special qualities.

A JM is like other guitars ........ so much of what might make it good (or less than impressive) is the slab of body wood, the neck, and their connection.

When I say special qualities I mean it doesn't have a tone of it's own that makes you say wow like a Les Paul or a Strat/Tele. They just don't speak any language I want to hear.

they do to me man. I can put on a Sonic Youth record and tell whether a certain sound is a les paul, tele, or jazzmaster.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

All interesting points in here...

The JM will never be my number 1 go to guitar but it is a nice addition to the stable. It feels nice, plays nice and despite the fact that it doesn't sound liek a Strat or like a Tele it does still sound like a Fender.

I listened to it a lot the other night and those alnico bar magnet Classic Player pickups are good but they do not sound like an old Jazzmaster...mioght swap 'em out, might not, I'm gonna give it a little more time and see how I feel...

Totally understand. Everyone has their preference and their "perfect guitar". Mine just happens to be the Jazzmaster because it has everything I could possibly look for in a guitar.

It has a good middle ground tone for me. It isn't the grunty meaty low sound of a humbucker, but it isn't the super high sound of a strat or tele single coil either. It is just the right middle ground I have looked for, just mellow enough for me.

I love the way they ride like a strat and have the upper fret access I take advantage of a lot. They feel right at home around my waistline and isn't as heavy as an LP.

I absolutely adore all the strings behind the bridge. That sort of look has always captivated me tonally and aesthetically. The whammy bar is always nice to have for the weird sounds when I want them. It doesn't dive like a bigsby but it gives me just enough octave-shift to get some versatility out of it.

If I were the King of my own guitar world, the Jazzmaster would undoubtedly be my Queen.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

I may end up going for a vintage model. My next purchase is an amp, but after that I have my heart set on an old fender.

Re: To anyone who's played a Fender Jazzmaster..

I am thinking about replacing my Japanese Jazzmaster pickups with Seymour Duncan ones. I wonder what would be the best choice. Can you explain the difference between the SJM-2 and the Antiquity II? I heard that setting the SJM2 in the neck and the SJM3 in the bridge would be a good option... What about the Fender USA '62 Vintage Jazzmaster pickups as compared to the previous two?

Any tips?

Much appreciated.

Hey. The way mine is set up is an Antiquity I in the bridge and the Antiquity 2 in the bridge. It's a weird but cool combo. The neck is what I use almost exclusively because it is a more vintage aged tone.

Thanks for that. Another question: do the Antiquity fit into the white soapbar or are they black? I've seen recent versions of the JM with black soapbars and wonder whether that has to do with the pickups or is a different matter? My JM has white soapbars and though I want to change the pickups I wouldn't want to to change the aesthetics of the gtr.

The JM pickups themselves just sit under a cover. You can get the covers in white or black. Whichever pickups you end up getting you will be able to just swap them with the stock pickup. The covers will work the same from stock to SD pups.
