In "Darkness" by Rage Against The Machine, does anyone know what he is doing to get those crazy noises in the guitar solo?

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

I dont know of that specific song, But I know he uses an Orange amp and various effects (including a digitech whammy which might be it).

Sorry i cant help u.
Bump ^

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

ya, i know morello uses a lot of crazy effects, and that digitech whammy is one he likes to use. I dont know the specific song either, but i know he also usually uses a custom guitar, which probably gives him a pretty unique tone.

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

Are you sure about the Orange? I thought it was some random Peavey or something like that....

And Morello's "custom" guitar is usually his $80 Pawnshop Special

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

as to his effects on this song, no idea. but i'm going to clear up what others have said in here about his rig:

He uses a Peavey 4x10 with a 50 watt Marshall JCM800, S/S/S "soul power" Strat with noiseless/noiseless/hotrails in standard E, or a stock old Tele in drop-D. His "arm the homeless" pawnshop guitar was retired when Audioslave started. both the arm the homeless and soul power guitars are fitted with a cheapo tremolo effect, and the crappy ibanez floyd that the bar rattles loose on. :)

A bit of variance amongst posters here. Check out this, it's pretty close to what I remember seeing in his Guitar Player cover story:

-as you can see, not exactly a rig of doom. Tom says at one point he got sick of always trying to hunt down the perfect rig, and decided to become more imaginative with the gear he had at hand. There's a lesson in there somewhere...

That's the whammy set up a 5th... I can tell you because I own a whammy. It's the same sound used in the solo to "Know Your Enemy". He's toggling his killswitch creating that (what I consider it to be) a Nintendo-like sound at the beginning of that solo.

I've studied Morello enough to be able to say I'm almost 100% positive this is what he's got going on.

*EDIT* excuse me, it's not a killswitch, it's a 3-way pickup selector in which he turns the neck volume to 0, using it like a killswitch.

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

his soul power strat actully has a duncan bucker in the bridge... cool rails maybe?

its in one of the guitar words... and the other 2 pickups are fender vintage noiseless i believe.

vintage noiseless, vintage noiseless, hotrails.

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

if you like him, listen to some adrian belew, and see what can be done with a guitar, some effects, and really creative hands.

You sure about that? I saw Audioslave live last summer and he brought that guitar out for one song. I wish I could remember what it was, but I remember the white cloud/sheep design (or whatever the hell it is) all over the guitar. The giant TV screen things on the side of the stage did I closeup on it, so maybe he's still using it on occasion?

hm, in guitar world he said he retired it for his soul power strat, but even retired people work, so maybe the same applies to guitars? lol

In a recent Guitar World interview:

"The mongrel 'Arm The Homeless' guitar has been featured prominently in recent Audioslave rehearsals and is lobbying hard for a Seabuiscit-like return to glory."

"I only have one amp... a 50w 2 channel Marshall JCM800 and the tubes have never been changed, and i got it in '87. I've never even opened it up so whats going on in there remains a mystery to me and my tech."

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

Him never changing his tubes completely amazes me every time I hear him play, that and his pedal acrobatics

I think Che meandered his way up from the speaker cab and into the tubes. :)

Re: Tom Morello sounds...

Wow never changed the tubes? Holy crap... Thats a long time/lot of gigs to play and never change the tubes.

That's probably the secret ingedient to his signature "tone." Everytime I hear the guitar to Rage/Audioslave, I can always tell it's them if I don't even know the song by Tom Morello's tone.

I think that's a lie. His tone changed dramatically between RATM's debut and second albums....

He's also a gigging musician who puts his gear though hell. I don't believe him when he says he's never changed the tubes. Just like I don't believe EVH when he talks about his tone.....
