Re: Tom Morello

I can't stand Morello... never heard his playing, but for his stances on certain topics.

Obviously grew up a spoiled brat who is clueless as to how the world really works.

Re: Tom Morello

I first saw him around 93/ 94 in the video I think of the song 'Freedom'. Was waiting for him to shine with that 'arm the homeless' superstrat but I guess the amazement stops there. I am from the 80s and highly respect guitar playing with skills Tom and the rest of 90s alternative bands are right there in the bin with Thusrton Moore, sorry.

Then he sort of got my attention again with Audioslave, but again...same ol' same ol'...

I know what you mean. I think Ted Nugent is a ****ing idiot and prefer to remember him as a '70's guitar hero.

Tom idolized Randy Rhodes early and learned all his sh!t. Along with other 80s guitar heros.
Don't hold it against the guy just because he got bored of something a long time ago that you're still memorized by.

Re: Tom Morello

Sorry, but I agree with the "ignorant" one

As to Mr. Springsteen, like many other aging big names, he made an unfortunate choice of who to associate with in a misguided attempt to "stay current". Googling seems to indicate he's since rectified the mistake....

Rage can go share a dumpster fire with Korn and their ilk

Nikki Sixx and the rest of Crüe aren't exactly the poster children for sophisticated intellectual guitar music

Also, radio was/is his JOB, he had to branch out and mix up a variety of guests to stay popular... doesn't mean the 80s crowd has mad respect for Morello or anything, just that his producers felt he needed to get some 90s people to appeal to a wider audience

I wasnt saying Sixx a virtuoso.. (tho I was a crue fan)... I do like his show online where he gets guys to come in and talk gear and music. My Favorite Riff. As I said, I learned alot about Tom from watching him on that show.

Re: Tom Morello

Topics like these sure identify those who have an artistic approach to the guitar, and who are just simply instrumentalists...

Re: Tom Morello

something I found very interesting watching him with Sixx.. I ALWAYS see him in mags and stuff with the Arm the homeless strat. But in the vid, he had this beat up Les Paul and was demonstrating one of his "tricks" where he rapidly flips the pickup selector back and forth. ( I know, nothing earth shattering there) But, what I found interesting is he kinda spoke like he always uses that guitar. Didnt mention the strat.

So you pick yuor favorite artists based on their musical backgound, not the output? I couldn't care less if the guy is a Berklee graduate; his playing sucks.

'Artistic' as in unplugging the guitar cord and making weird noise by touching the output jack back and forth with it, or sticking a drumstick under the strings and running it across the fretboard?

You and I surely have different definition of 'artistic'...lol. Poor Steve Vai, he is just an 'instumentalist'.

Re: Tom Morello

Most probably. He is a vegetarian and apparently living a spiritual life. Why should not he be a feminist?

Irony.

Vai's known mainly for playing guitar... Morello, moreso for activist-esque posturing and the sticker on his guitar.

Afaik, the kind of '"activist" that manages to massively boost recruitment of panicked normies for the other side of any issue simply by showing up

Stickers will make anyone a better guitarist.

And a more upright, moral human being... apparently.

Like the other guy said recently: "Is there a specific topic in which you actually know something?".

Vai is probably the most accomplished human being in the world of guitar, from Frank Zappa's sideman to DLR to Whitesnake; to writing music for movies to composing orchstral pieces to record company business and crap...I could go on and on but that's dumbass.

Morello is communist activist. He has a black tele with 'Sendero Luminoso' (a communist org in Peru) across the top. But hey, at least it's not his mom's curtain, right?

Re: Tom Morello

RATM is so much more listenable than Steve Vai. Weird noises in a good song > 7 minute sheedy wankfest

"Weird noises in a good song" is a much better description of Vai (at least at his best) than "7 minute sheedy [sic] wankfest". I'd take the first DLR album over anything Morello has ever done. That being said, I have grown fond of RATM over the years; it is one of extremely few postdiluvian bands I find some interesting ideas in, and would mind owning a CD or two of. I might have spoken dismissively about him here for things he have said in the past, but but he did have some interesting takes on the guitar, and that in an era that sorely lacked that.

Im confused as to where we disagree, that's what I said??

Vai = renowned guitarist
Morello = idealistic Harvard kid/eternal manchild who ran off to slum it in LA with political poseurs and edgy members of the great unwashed

Btw i'm soviet born and have a soviet flag (shoddily made in china) hanging in my garage, so surely it's not regarding my commie street cred

...is it cuz I use the soviet flag as a sorta-curtain?! Well y'all can bite me, it's my birthright and I'll do with it what I please.

Tom Morello was raised by a single mother who was a high school teacher; not exactly what most people would call a privileged background.

How does one get into Harvard as an "underprivileged" youth?

Upon further consideration:

Tom Morello apparently has a net worth of $30 million:

...yet he rages against the very machine that got him that $$$$$$$$.

The hypocrisy is plainly evident.

Now, either he's incredibly stupid (in the literal sense)... but I doubt that...

...or....

He, like certain others of his ilk, is clever in knowing that there are lots of moronic suckers out there that buy into his activism spiel.

This is his real mechanism for making money; not his music per se... but his "message".

And the more moronic suckers out there that buy his crap = the more $$$ for Tom Morello.

...laughing all the way to the bank.
