Tone pots and tone quality

Question. Do crappy tone/volume pots have an adverse effect on tone quality (other than the obvious inability to effectively adjust said tone/volume). Thanks.

Re: Tone pots and tone quality

Not unless they are broken, no. They are just resistors with no other significant electroc properties and they react neutral to frequency.

This is opposed to capacitors, in particular old-style large capacitors which have a whole range of other properties that makes them react audibly (barely) to different frequencies.

Having said that, cheap pots can have very large tolerance.

What do you mean by the very large tolerance, Its the + - of the value right ?

How does the large tolerance affect the performance of cheap pots ?,

does it mean when you turn the knob of the pot, its not that accurate and specific in its

resistance and its use of the Cap in its treble bleed and frequency cutoff ?

The curve when you go down is all over the place anyway and different for pretty much all pots.

Large tolerance means that you pot labeled 500 Kohm can have 350 or 750 Kohm, you could hear that. But that you can measure, if your pot happens to not be off you are not affected.
