No but that's a good idea. Does anyone have an alder strat with a JB that can record a quick sample for comparison? My Rivera is on the bright side with a real British flavor overdrive. Everything was set around 12:00 except the bass was about 11:00. I used a Maxon OD820 as a light boost with the tone knob at 11:00. Pretty straight forward.

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

Cool comparison. Just goes to show that it's at least 70% amp contibuting to the tone and the rest is split between guitar, pickup, and misc.

Also: these do sound different IRL, but for some of us, how they sound recorded is important also. I'd probably chop out the bass of the TZ and leave only the JB sounding parts in a mix. So this is a useful comparison.

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

I have no real life experience with either in a strat. But in that clip, the TZ sounds a little clearer and brighter, a little more sizzle.

The JB sounds a little less clear, more bass, and what I would call a little more grease.

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

not in a position to listen, but cant wait to do so. Ive used both and in my environment can DEF hear huge difference. TZ usually has huge low end and more pushed sound.. The JB always has more cut. I took the stock dimarzios out of my Charvel for the JB/jazz set. I wish I could afford another of the Charvels and leave the Dim set in as is isnt bad, but the guitar for me is an 80s axe and I wanted more of an Iconic 80s sound..

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

Absolutely bizarre! You guys have zero idea what a TZ sounds like in the real world, with the amp EQ'd to take advantage of each pickups strengths. It is NOTHING like a JB.
Yeah, and what your hearing is the same amp( and I doubt its a real great one) eq'd about the same. You could probably get any two pickups to sound similar.
In point of fact, the JB isnt close to the TZ at all in sound. This would be more apparent if you took your head out of your A** .
The JB is a unique pickup to Duncan. If I had to pick a Dimaz that sounded remotely close to the JB at high gain eq's properly it'd be the Fred, but even that is a stretch.
You could say the Norton , or the Breed would get you acceptably JB'ish sound, but they'd never get that signature Duncan tone, which is famously different from the trademark DiMaz sound.
If you want a JB , get a JB..period.

Who said they wanted a JB? The guy was just posting some clips for people to hear (I like how everyone guessed the JB wrong lol). Are you actually in a band, or do you just buy a ton of gear, play it in your bedroom then come on here to angrily tell everyone how much knowledge you have of this stuff?

go get em!

I'll admit that I'm one of the ones who guessed wrong. In my experience with the JB it sounded much more like the second track than what I heard on the first track.

Anyway, thanks for the comparison. :friday:

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

Thats some good info. How does the 047 cap compare to using a 1 meg pot? I thought the 1 meg also cut bass.

actually the 1 meg just allows more highs to get through but really does not chop the bass any,it is just a perception from the increased presence. the cap however reduces bass and the resonant peak(pu's presence) goes up slightly

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

Does a higher value cap cut more bass? Or is it the opposite? I wired a .047 cap in series with the hot lead of a Duncan Distortion neck pup, and it tamed the woof a bit.. but I've been too lazy to try a different value cap yet..

yes higher will cut more lows

Re: Tone Zone and JB compared

here is a clip of a Mod a guy did to his TZ to tame the bass and make it much clearer
http://www.lonephantom.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/TZ_cap_shootout.mp3
the first part is stock, the second is with a 0.047uf cap in series with the hot wire and the third part is a 0.01uf cap in series to reduce the bass end of a TZ.
here is the post,

i may find a new love for the tone zone after trying these mods

Thanks for this!

I will be trying this as I find the TZ to just overbearing...
