Five solid-bodies, four semi-hollows, one full-hollow, one acoustic, one nylon, one 5-string bass.

The very concept of having "too many guitars" just does NOT exist.

It's an abomination created by unscrupulous wives/girlfriends/parents just to unlawfully prevent you to exercise a key part of your freedom of expression and creative soul, not to mention keeping your own hard-earned cash for themselves, aiming for the throat by exacerbating a under-false-premises-created sense of guilt,

What it DOES exist though, is "not enough space".

I've got 6 electric, 1 bass, and 1 acoustic. Anything more would be out of ego and boredom.

Then I've either got a huge ego or I'm extremely bored.

Too many? Nah. Impossible. I'm constantly on the prowl for more...already have:

6 acoustics
2 basses,
24 electrics.

So 9 guitars...The problem is maintaining all 9, I'll go through phases where I'll set one up correctly and that'll be my #1 for a while. The once set up perfectly get kept in their cases to reduce temperature/ humidity changes (the PRS and EBMM which was refretted and Plekked). It's pretty mandatory to use coated strings too

When I was a kid I remember reading Guitar Player with Rick Nielsen and his house had guitars everywhere and I wanted to do the same. I figured having guitars in every room would make it easier to just pick them up and start playing. But in reality, I've found having more guitars doesn't make play any more. Although I do play easily between 10-20 hours a week.

Then I realized that my guitar teacher who does nothing but play guitar all day is almost always using the same guitar. He gigs with about 5 or 6 of them (and plays out twice a week). I think he has about 18 of them in total but a good number are put away in cases and he almost never reaches for them.

So I realize that I don't need 13 guitars to get by. I can do fine with fewer and maybe trade up a bit.

In reality I find myself going between 3-4 of them for just about everything.

And it makes me buy more strings, do more maintenance, etc. etc.

I've only sold a couple from my collection, and that was almost 30 years ago, my wife never complains when I purchase a new guitar, just like I never complain when she buys a new pair of shoes.....

As much as I would love to have a closet full of guitars, it will be a long time before I can own more than 5-6 guitars (not counting my lap steel). There was a time when this upset me, but recently I realized that I really only use one acoustic and one electric at 90% of my gigs. I own three electrics, one acoustic, and a lap steel. I'm selling one electric, but I'll be replacing it with something else before the end of the year. I'd like to have a backup acoustic, but there are a lot of guitar and non-guitar expenses I need to take care of before I can get to that one.

These are just simple strat and tele copies. Ash bodies, nice round necks, SD vintage style pups and Wilkinson Gotoh hardware. Really nice and you can get them for Fender MIM prices. They are kind of rare and they did choose some kind of funny names for them.

Yes, my being a gear ho has made me spend more time dialing them in than playing. Now, Im trying to play more and find myself going mostly for the same few guitars.

It depends, from a quantity standpoint, my wife has way more shoes than I could ever equal in guitars, I've been lucky enough to get some great deals in the past as well. Some of my collection (Gibsons, & Martin) did cost quite a bit, some others, not so much......

I have a lot of guitars and it is a challenge to keep them all set up and playable. Even more of a challenge to actually play all of them regularly. Some do sit neglected and forgotten in their cases for long periods of time, but I love that Christmas Morning effect of opening up a gig bag and rediscovering a guitar that I haven't played in awhile. I make a point of rotating through them so that I am not always playing the same three guitars. Lately I've been neglecting my superstrats and leaning on the dual humbucker herd.

Some live in the rehearsal room, others sit in the living room or the bedroom. I even keep two electrics in my office at work. There is always a selection of guitars at hand, and I can pick one up and play for 3 minutes whenever I feel the urge.

But the concept of "too many" guitars is a heresy. You just need to sprout a few more arms!

Just spread them around the house, so it's 1-2 here and there. Then it won't look like you have that many.

Sometimes I go to other peoples houses and see all the books on their shelf and all the DVDs and CDs and I think, "So perhaps I'm not such a hoarder after all. In fact, I'm downright selective."

I would have to move. There isn't room in my place for many more. I'd like to get down to around 8 but the decision making is kinda hard

This is the only yardstick I recognize for telling when you've got too many guitars - when they no longer fit into your home. If you can fit more, you don't have too many yet.

I have passed on several amazing deals on guitars which later appreciated in value, and would have been a blast to play and look at in the meantime. I told myself "I already have enough, I don't want too many guitars".
Since then, I've regretted those mistakes and told myself I won't repeat them.
