Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

No, they aren't finished yet. But they are ordered and paid for, so now I wait. Robert Fripp sits and wears earphones as well, so there is precedent.
Turnaround was only a couple weeks for mine, including shipping to PA. The hardest part was getting a good impression, I had to go to an audiologist to get mine done right.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

No way I can afford to outfit my band with them at the moment (and no real reason to ATM since we've only been playing for fun for the last few years). I do wear the earplugs that cut the sound pressure while still letting you hear what you're playing. I've even taken to wearing them when I attend the rare live show.

Which ones are you using? I’ve got a few pair, some better than others. But I’m always on the lookout for something better.

I actually got a pair at a Motley Crue show a few years back that work pretty well. I always take them when we go see bands around town.

I think that the brand name is "Hearos".

Thanks!
Just ordered a pair of he musicians series. On sale $12.22 with free shipping.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

I find them worth it. The bass and treble no longer make me nauseous, and I can hear the drums and guitar well enough to follow them.

Yup. I use them for concerts too. They also come in handy for my daughters’ music recitals.

Yeah, they said a few weeks. I just went to their lab and they did it for me.

The guy from Linkin Park too.
I have been standing in front of loud drummers and walls of amps for 45 years or so. I have high frequency loss in particular on the left side and know it and monitor it so closed back phones in my situation help me keep my hearing. In particular playing in Churches is BRUTAL on stage volume ( one place iI played for a while we put a DB meter on stage and got get this 130 DB!!!). Many times in the Black Pentecostal Churches I will use pluggs on stage if we are not running in ears and phones to get the levels down.

We were never anywhere close to that onstage when we used amps and the soundman had trouble because of the stage volume, granted, we don't want concert level sound for the congregation, it's got to work for everyone there (all ages, it can be a tough balance). That's insane levels anywhere, not sure how the you would give a good mix with stage levels that high. Where was the dB meter to get that level, seems like it would be right up against a speaker or bass drum or something.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Hmm, that number sounded, well, a little/lot high, so I did a little googlin' and 130 dB is hard for live stadium bands to hit, when The Who had the record as loudest band, it was 126dB, Kiss hit 136 once and was forced to turn down, supposedly Manowar hit 139dB at a sound check once. So, 130dB on stage is outrageous, I have to believe the meter was too close and in direct line with a source, and, still that seems way too loud. But, as usual, I could be wrong, don't know many that would be able to stand the sound levels in that church though.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Isn't 130dbs the sound pressure of a jet engine at take off rpm measured from 10' away?

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

I can't imagine a band playing that loudly. It must be fun for the people out front. I let the PA do all of the work.

I have an inkling that my band is probably running about 115-120 dbs in our big practice room.
That is turned down.

Man, that hurts me just reading it.

Lol, that's why I wear Hearos.
It's metal, in a good sized room with carpet and a popcorn ceiling.
In truth, I've help turn it down in the last few years.
Back around '10, we were probably running at just shy of 130.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Military jet aircraft take-off from aircraft carrier with afterburner at 50 ft (130 dB).
