Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

I can't imagine a band playing that loudly. It must be fun for the people out front. I let the PA do all of the work.

Painful was what it was!! You guys must not have been in to many Black Penticostal churches cauze trust me they are LOUD!!!!
PS wore plugs every service every time and is was still brutal!!
Lets put it like this was running a Mesa Boogie .50 cal + head on a Fender closed back 2/12 and had trouble hearing my AMP!

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Wow, that is indeed crazy. I can't imagine trying to perform with sound levels that high.

I had cut my left ring finger tip badly so was running sound because I could not play and kept raising cane about the levels + we kept blowing speakers. Finally talked them into buying a DB meter and got that reading the first time I used it. Because of it I got the Lesley 0ff stage and in the closet miced + got a drum shield but the levels in the santuary still ran at 115 -120DB or so and was really pushing the FOH hard just to get clarity over the stage volume. It was brutal and frankly not many metal bands play at close to the stage levels you see in the Black Penticostal Churches.

Wow, that is indeed crazy. We went to essentially an ampless and monitorless stage a few years ago. Originally it was because volumes kept getting louder. The good side effect is that there is a lot less to carry, the mix out front is much better, and the stage looks a lot cleaner.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Yeah, you got me on the BP church thing, not a lot of them out here in Colorado. I think a youth pastor here described us as charisma-costal, but no way sound levels would get like that, some people already think we are pushing it, but I can't tell what the levels are out front. And since I am wearing IEMs with my own Aviom mixer, I can't tell you what it sounds like out front when I'm playing, very disconcerting.

I get hired in from time to time to play guitar for stuff like this and the stage levels are always BRUTAL! Many of these guys from a clops standpoint are CRAZY good and will scare the living beejusus out of you!! They NEVER play anything the s same way twice also! Sometimes you will just flat wail for an HOUR or more non stop just shredding your brains out!! Think for real tent revival scene Blues Brothers 2 LOL!!

Picked them up today. They fit great, and are the best sounding things I've had around my ears, ever. I only did a few small tests with my guitar rig, and I won't get a chance to try them with my system for a few weeks as the next several shows are festivals, so we are not using our system. So the preliminary findings are good so far. We'll see how it goes.

Nice!
What set up do you use for festivals?

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

For festivals, the PA is already provided, and in many cases, the backline, too. So I go with a more conventional set up, then. But I am getting to the point where I will probably bring my IEM system and ask them to plug it in.

Well, they should if you ask.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

I've had just as many sound people sigh and throw up their hands, too. Yeah, that isn't how they are supposed to act, and they should be professionals and know how to do this...but the funny thing is if I get that reaction (which is extremely common in jazz and blues festivals), and I push my point, I will get the worst sound ever...mostly because of spite. Yes, that is a real thing- I wish it wasn't.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Well, they don't want to do anything that is outside their comfort zone.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Absolutely. But I am finding that 'sound people' are more defined as 'the person who owns all of the equipment and likes to hang around bands' rather than someone who is really great at their craft and loves to make bands sound their best.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

That's sad. I suppose that it makes one appreciate the real professionals.

Re: Took the leap and ordered IEMs

Oh yeah. A good soundperson is indeed as important as any member of the band.
