Trainwreck anyone?

Anyone ever played a real trainwreck? I'm guessing not too many, including me.

There are some schematics floating around on the net for two of Ken Fisher's creations. I"m thinking about giving one of them a whirl.

Anyone have any thoughts on them? I understand they are consdiered primarily "lead" amps. Is that right? :)

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

ive heard the same thing, i only know one guy whos played one and he said it was kinda like a dumble. singing sustain with great articulation and note seperation and a tight focused tone

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Leslie West uses a Ken Fisher designed Trainwreck in conjuntion with his Marshalls for added low end, like a subwoofer, according to what I remember him saying on his DVD, Big Phat A$$ Guitar. Very cool blues rock tone the way Leslie used it. Would like to hear what one sounds like on it's own.

I've heard that part of the magic is the exact values as stated with 0% tolerance.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Aren't the originals like $15,000 or something ridiculous like that?

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

never played one

I can't think of anyone more respected in the amp building community.

I've read that he paid particular attention to components, and the physical layout and placement of the trannies and power supply.

I've also read his amps are very touch responsive, and love to be cranked.

he has some interesting comments here:

i say do it man. if you can produce one of those amps, it would be freaken awsome, and i think we all know you can do it, since weve all seen/heard what youve done. im sure someone here will be willing to buy it, as long as you dont make it like that one guy said, $15,000 :laugh2: thats insane.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Haven't played a real 'wreck but I played a clone built by a guy who owned the real deal. I thought that the extreme touch sensitivity made it a great amp for going back and forth between lead and rhythm.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Scott, do it! If you could nail it, I think you'd get some serious attention. I've always dug the Trainwreck clips I've heard (there aren't too many unfortunately). Quite possibly the best lead amp I've ever heard and the crunchy rock chords are great, too!

Yeah but dont listen to chris. He plays the worst amp ever. Seriously, who plays a Bogner.

J/K. Go for it scott. I think Jeremy (LastwinJ) did one recently and posted tons of pics. Its a well documented amp I think. Go for it!

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Ken is an artist who has components made to his specification.

For example, he has the iron plate used in the transformers made to specific properties.

Heard Jim Sperra (Kaukauna Wisconsin) play through one, but I never got the chance to play on one.

Very articulate tone and touch sensitive. A player has to know how to play well bacause everything is amplifier with incredible clarity.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

It may have been on his site, but I listened to the clips of the Komet 60 and Trainwreck side by side, and they're very similar. The original Trainwreck was a little smoother sounding, and the Komet was a little edgier. I've played the Komet 60, and it's like a big fat modded Marshall. YoungAngus is the only one I know of who has one.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

I've played thru 2 of them. Both were awesome. For pure rock they are probably the finest sounding amp I've heard. Very articulate and extremely touch responsive. Meaning that the way you attack the strings will influence the way the amp responds. I played a 60' Strat thru one and I don't remeber models ot specifics. It was a long time ago The other time I played a 335 thru it and I think the 335 sounded pretty amazing thru that thing. The prices they command today are obsurd, but collectors are chomping at the bit to get them. I would probably buy a Komet and bank ther 12 to 15K. For a guy like me I just could never see spending that kind of $ on an amp or a guitar!
