Trainwreck anyone?

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

I know that making a wreck clone isn't going to be easy, but I'm up to the challenge now after reading this thread. I know it's coming across ****y, but I'm 100% confident I can do this.

very simple build.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

After listening to clips 4 and 9, it sounds like the Trainwreck has a bit more natural compression than the Komet. Makes it a bit more lush. Anyone else hearing that?

Scott....this is the first amp that's piqued my interest in quite some time. Do you really think your going to build this beast?

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Hoss, I think it's going to take a certain kind of guitarist to fall in love with a 'wreck. I'm not sure it's me to be frank. But, people want high gain and this seems to be rather high gain. Not a channel switcher, but high gain nonetheless. Now, if I could mix in a clean channel, then maybe with an ABY box, I'd really have something special.

sounds good...

with the way my band has been going at church lately...i'm thinking i'm definitely gonna need a some more gain on tap one of these days...and i really think i'd like the "flexibility" of a head with a few cabs like a 2x12 and a 4x12...i dunno maybe i'd dig the edana pretty well to...but i'm definitely curious about the "wreck" thing?! we've got a big outdoor show in October and i'm a little worried about my Jr. for it...i may try to borrow someone else's rig for it, but i'll cross that bridge when i come to it!

It's very easy. I have a Komet clone, it was the easiest build I've ever done (except for 5E3s). I mean, it's 96% blackface Bassman! There's no magic there.

The Komet is pretty much dead-on the Express, except it has significantly higher voltages everywhere and slightly less low-end (smaller bypass and coupling caps).

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

Doesn't a Trainwreck have way more crunch?

Yeah, but that's due to one component, the cathode resistor on the third triode.

The BF/SF Bassman circuit is triode>tone stack>volume>triode>triode>power amp. The Komet/Express is identical.

There are numerous minor component changes - the Express/Komet tone stack uses values that are kind of a mix of Fender and Marshall, etc., but the big difference is the third triode - in the Fenders it's an amplification stage, in the T'wreck designs it is a clipper, almost exactly like the diodes in a lot of amps. The cathode resistor is 10K, about ten times a typical value, and the result is that any significant signal into this triode will cause it to cut off, or clip, on the negative swing. So it's a built-in asymmetrical clipper. The Marshall 2203/2204 do the same thing, but earlier in the circuit.

The power amp is pretty much typical for a Fender/Marshall, they use OTs with a higher-than-typical primary impedance but there's nothing special otherwise.

Yep. Chassis was just ordered, trannies soon. I've got a few guys ahead of it, but it'll be coming.

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

too cool bro!!!

honestly, when the time comes...i'll have some thinking to do...moreso if this project rocks like i know it's gonna!!!

Re: Trainwreck anyone?

I wonder what a wreck would sound like with a metal zone in front of it...

Like any other amp with a metal zone in front it of...like crap!

Why would you take ANY good sounding tube amp and add something like a Metal Zone to it...just use the loudest/cheapest amp you can find, a metal zone has SO much gain going on it makes all amps sound like a metal zone!
