I've posted several times here about the Traynor YCS50 series amps. Today I got to try out the YCS50 Head with my Avatar 112 cab currently loaded with a Celesion g12-80. I didn't get to the store as soon as I had hoped, so I only had about 35-40 minutes to try it out.
I was able to try out the 50 watt full power mode, as well as the 15 watt class A mode. I tried my Telecaster and my Ibanez Artcore with it, and I really dig this amp a lot. There's a whole bunch of different mode switches on each channel for getting different tones out of it, and plenty of volume for playing with a band. I was the only person in the store, so I was able to get it pretty loud at a few points. The one gripe I have heard about this amp is that it's very bright and trebly. I did find that on one setting using the bright switch along with the expander on channel 2. I guess I would say that I'd prefer to have some treble there, so long as you can dial it out.
The P-Rails in my telecaster go nicely with this amp, as do the stock humbuckers in the Artcore. It distorts very nicely and isn't the "gravely stoner rock" sound of their 20 watt tube amp that I didn't particularly care for. The 15 watt class A mode is kinda cool - the amp gets sloppier in 15 watt mode probably due to the increased tube saturation, but again more different tones. The spring reverb is kinda different, but still nice. Not like a Fender reverb, but different and still very useable. Each channel has an effects blend volume as well, which I can't remember seeing on a lot of other amps. Although they may be out there - maybe Egnater does this? They have a LOT of options with their amps.
I may end up going back next week to spend some more time with this amp and take one of my other guitars and probably my telecaster as well. I want to hear how it does with p90's and the rail coil on the P-rails. I also want to hear what the Duncan vintage rail in my Godin will sound like.
If you're in the market for a new all tube amp, these are definitely worth checking out. Traynor has a great warranty, and I think for what you're getting these YCS amps are a pretty darn good deal. The head is pretty lightweight also, another plus in my book. And just so you know, I don't work for Traynor or YorkVille- so there isn't any flag waving going on here. I work full time as an IT Coordinator for a school district.
