Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

The box got "pine avenue " adress.
So Evan says its pre 1993.

So with the Long leg, Big logo, Old Square hole no ring bobbins id say this is a NOS APH1BJ from late 80s.
Amazing!

Thanks Evan!

Congrats on finding a NOS, MJ-made p'up.

For the record, what color is the wire and how much is the DC reading?

Inquiring minds would like to know. :cool2:

Red wire. not as deep blood red as the 1988s.
3.93k screw and 4.05k. slug.

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

Can someone from SD crew confirm the jazz vs aph.
The resistance is the same.

But my vintage jazz A2 test do not sound exactly the same as vintage aph.

R8 with double black aph1bj /nj butyrate bobbin.
7.25k 8.0k set from 1986.

Sweet child o mine tone.

WHAT A MAGNIFICENT GUITAR.

This is my fav LP. a Plain Top R8 . . . through my eyes, they do not come more desirable than this !

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

Found another Zebra bridge pickup.
Not in original condition.
Bobbin screws are stewmac or similar.
4 conductor conversion etc.
This might be one of John Ryhmas old pickups.

Far low right with screw missing. 1986 aph Zebra/revzebra collection.
4 modern to the left for comparision.

Read 3.93k/3.96k so its little low compared to modern.
But typical for 1986.

Im restoring it with original 1986 screws, tape, magnet and wire that I have from a dead vintage JAZZ.

Im painting a R9 historic in butterscotch. Zebra/Zebra will look great in that one.

DIY Vintage Seymour Duncan APH1BJ restoration project (Pic heavy)

Got this APH1BJ a couple of days ago.
Nice 1986 Zebra APH1BJ with some wear and tear.
But it also had lots of updated parts and service potential.

There is only 2 ways to restore a vintage Maricela JuareZ (MJ)
1: Send it to her.
2: Respect the vintage value but do it yourself with all original parts and make it a fun DIY for the Duncan forum.

And I had all 1986 all original parts in stock so this would make a great DIY project for the archives. 

1: Check your supply of vintage parts.
Old APH1BJ base plate from a “short leg” converted pickup.
2uo6o7s.jpg

Clean it up due to the wax will mess up the soldering later on.

All original 1986 braided wire. Yellow and black cloth.
k1c44.jpg

I’m serious... 1986 all original tape 
x5r195.jpg

80s A2 magnet
80s Bobbin screws

2: This particular had a 4 conductor conversion and hockey tape.
I added all original 1986 braided wire. Yellow and black cloth.
Scrape the surface on the braided wire with a razor blade.
Old dirt and oxide is not good for soldering later on. Just clean a one inch for ground connection and soldering spot.
Use a clamp or similar for easy hustle free soldering.

3: Check magnet strength and polarity if you have the equipment. Mine was very weak so I charged it with 2 BIG neo´s.

4: Add original re-charged 1986 Alnico 2 magnet, maple spacer and other parts to the base plate.

5: Add the bobbins. Cut and solder the wires. Keep it clean! Cover the solder joints with proper tape to avoid shorting issues later on.
The vintage Duncan’s seem to use bobbin tape for covering the solder joints.
Now is a good time to check ground connection and total resistance.
This read a healthy 7,95K (modern reads 8,1k at same temperature)

6: This particular unit had some updates with Asian aftermarket round dome screws and not the typical “flatter” Duncan 80s screw.
Added some 80s all original Duncan’s! 

7: Re-pot the pickup!

I use some home brew secret wax mix for this to get it as close as possible to the 80s . ;)
Old aftermarket parts removed and the good old Duncan parts mounted.

8: Ok, time to clean it up!
I use home brew gunk for butyrate and other similar materials.
Double check polarity, mount it in one of your guitars.

9: Tell your wife to go shopping or similar.
Bring out the old Marshall 100w amp with all knobs on 7 and connect to 4x12 with celestions, stand in front of the mirror with mouth semi open pseudo orgasm style and legs 45* apart.
Strike favourite chord as hard as you can...done!

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

Fascinating thread. That black bobbin has some serious grooves, wonder what the deal is? Really close to the strings, or someone a serious string basher?

Ive seen similar on a BC rich.
But it got to be a combination of close to the string+string basher combined with a joker ... tremolo arm :)

Ok, The vintage zebra set is now mounted in my R8.

The zebra / revzebra underwound set will be mounted in my latest project... as soon as I get some time to put some laquer on it.

Can I buy this collection. Or half of it?

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

Time for a quick bump.
Got a couple of questions about my guitar replicas and pickups.
Found a couple of more aph's.
And ive handpicked a couple for my builds.

The OCD level is pretty high on this build.
Weight of wood and all parts are exactly like the Derrig looked in 86-87.
Even the double ring tuners etc.
Real nitro checking etc.

Small example of control cavity vs the real deal when Andy Brauer did some work on it.

Colour matching 800 grit wet sand and some nitro checking porn.
Or prawns like seymour calls it :)

Bobbin and colour comparisons for the fanatics

Top
1986 APH1BJ Darker then modern (Cream) and this match my NOS pickup. So it’s not darker than normal. Square hole CAB bobbin
2010 will used Slash sig (Light yellowish tone to it) Ring around the square hole plastic bobbin
Late 90s APH1 worn ivory bobbin. This used to be closer to 80s “white” then to Ivory. But it’s much darker due to sweat, dirt and UV. Ring around the square hole plastic bobbin

Small update ... cool project!

One of my older aph gave up after years of abuse at rehearsal.

Talked to MJ last year and now Im finally about to ship them back for service.
Imagine that the last time Duncan and MJ had these were around mid 1986 :)

Thanks Scott @Duncan

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

The vintage bobbins arrived at the customshop yesterday!
According to my postal tracking!

Last time MJ worked on them should have been ~early to mid 1986 :)

I hope Scott Olson or the custom shop crew can confirm that they arrived safely :)

Re: Tribute to MJ wound Alnico II pro from 1986 to 2013

MJ confirmed that they are done and might be on the way back to Europe again!

These are very valuable to me and I would like to thank Maricela Juarez, Scott Olsson and Derek Duncan for helping me with this project!
They just saved 2 vintage 1986 APH1BJ!

Right now I’m rocking a Pre-1983 A5 59B with a post-1983 A4 59N in the Honeyburst 58 Reissue
The 59 cherry burst reissue got a single conductor pre 1983 JB and a 1986 A4 Jazz
The 56 goldtop reissue use custom shop P90 with Ant magnets

And right now the Slash Derrig replica rock the NOS 1986 APH1BJ and APH1NJ!As a collector and vintage enthusiast I guess they should belong in a vault due to the fact that people wanna pay PAF size cash for them 

But they are doing what they are supposed to do = Rock in my main rehearsal guitar!

Where ever you are at must have the most borked vintage market in the world. Pre 90's A2 pros can be had easily under 200 sometimes much much under. Real PAF's you will have a very hard time finding a working one under 1k.
