How can anyone like that sound? No matter what I did, the tone sounded like a buzzy group of bees. The only way you could counteract it is by semi scooping the thing, which is just as bad. Played it with a Mesa cab and a Schecter Hellraiser and was very turned off by the tone.

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

Its an amp you have spend time with. So many knobs on the thing. I've got some fantastic tones out of one, and some bloody awful tones too.

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

Out of all the recto series, I think I like the single one the most. The dual recto is nice was well. Played the triple before and I honestly would take the dual over the triple. To me it sounds better and it's less money.

good advice.

how loud were you playing it? those amps like to be cranked :D .

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

After playing a single recto, I think there's alot of studio work that goes on to make em sound good recorded. The only boogie's I like are the Mark 4 series, and the boogie John Petrucci used on 'Images and Words'.

In all honesty, the only one I've ever been able to crank was the single because my friend has one. The dual and triple I may have cranked alittle at GC but I tend to not crank amps at that place do to my skills...or lack thereof. :D

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

this from a kid who thinks he gets good tone from a Hughes & Kettner Attax and a fur covered schecter? yeah i'm sure i'll trust you when it comes to good tone LOL

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

I was just going to ask the same thing?

I know that I never found the Recto sound to be too thrilling when I've tried it out in stores or a friend's, with their settings. But I also know that they need to be tweaked and spent time with to get what you really want.

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

Here in Toledo alot of mesa owners like to trade in their mesa recto's to Guitar center for $400-$600 and I'll play on them...and pretend i need to think about the $900-$1200 purchase

ive played the single and triple...Both with the schecter C-1 blackjack with real duncans...

The single is a rythm tone machine and is amazing when you drop to D...

but the triple rec just has too much gain on tap and sounds fizzy at low volumes...now when i cranked it up a little it got quite a bit nicer...

but all around the single is a usable beast...while im sure if i got the triple somehow it would take some intimate tweaking periods to find a sweet spot...

this was all on a road beaten but great sounding Crate Blue Voodoo cab with V-30's...I made them set both up on a decent cab because the Behringer 4x12 wasnt gonna give me a usable impression...

it is amazing they let me play on anything there soemtimes...

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

I have a Diezel Herbert, couple of Marshalls, and a 3-channel Triple Recto. They all sound great. I love them all. Most people who hate the Recto, don't understand it. It took me over 6 months to understand it. You should replace the Sovtec preamp tubes, for some good ones. I always use good pre-amp tupes in all amps. RFT's, Mullards, etc... The buzz comes from any of three things being set too high. Gain, Treble, or Presence. The mud people talk about is caused by the bass being set too high. On channel 3, modern mode, I set it with gain 2:00, treb 1:00, mid 11:00, bass 10:30, presence off. It's very aggressive sounding, but it's supposed to be. It's a modern sound. On channel 2 in Vintage mode, I use the same EQ settings, but Gain at 3:00, bass at 10:00, and Presence at 11:00. Very smooth, fat, and chewy. No buzz. The Recto is a popular amp, 'cause it's a good one. It can be buzzy if you want it that way, but doesn't need to be. If you want to hear buzzy amps, listen to SLO-100's, and Ubershalls. Buzz city, but I don't hear them being trashed. But again if you learn how to work them, you can tame the buzz and get some really good sounds out of them. I just hate when people try an amp out or buy it for a couple months, and say it sucks.

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

Oh yeah, I also use low output pickups (7 - 10K). High outputs will certainly buzz up amps quicker!

I love the dual recto 3 channel.

sounds great on soundgarden and foofighters albums

so versatile, great effects loop (assignable - a rare amp feature) every time I plug in i want one. so many different tones. you can switch up the tubes easily. its my number 1 amp on my list right now.

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

The Dual recto is the best of all rectos.it's still a Recto tho!I like how full it is ,and the gain structure makes me melt. But the loose bottom ,the overpowering Bass frequencies on String-Thru guitars is the down side.
And Dude ,please buy yourself a 50 watt amp.You will thank me later.Where the hell you want to krank the 150 watts to get a good sound?

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

I'm really not into rectal fire, but the

Mesa Lonestar

is an AWESOME amplifier.

I would get a 2x12 and possibly a hot plate - do you think that would compensate some? I cant fit the 4x12 in my toyota corrolla

Re: Tried a Triple Recto

My amp is a Road King, a Recto derivative. I never use the 4th channel, but 1 - 3 allow me to get some killer tones, from country all the way thorugh hard rock and metal. It need a boost of some kind for leads, but with my Tele it sounds nothing like what you would characterize as a "Rectifer tone". As others have said, the EQ is incredibly interactive, it's a pain to dial in unlike a Marshall type EQ. Also, you really need to get the juice flowing into the tubes, I almost always use mine on the 50W setting, (tube rectifier, EL34s in Triode mode, with the power sag engaged) except on the clean channel, I use 100W of 6L6 power. I can definately see how you could plug in and hate it though.
