Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

New Cort dealership in town. Had to see what it's about.

A very neat store, with very friendly salesman. I first tried this KX Custom:

Which is basically a Ibanez SZR. SD 59/JB stock with coil splits, tonepro bridge, locking tuners and graphite nut.

Great guitar, but so close to my SZ that it's pointless. And I didn't like the neck pickup sound... it's not as deep as my SZ.
I blame the two extra frets, the placement is closer to the bridge.
But it's a fantastic Hard Rock guitar, super easy to play and the tones are very versatile.

Then I tried this M520:

Sweet Jesus. I could happily toss my Strat away and forget about it with this one.
The Alnico IV P90s on it have a sweet bark and the clean tones on this thing were absolutely glorious.
The dirty sounds are raunchy, not very thick but clear and defined without being harsh. All mahogany. Pure butter to play.

The price for it? 10% more than a new Std. Squier Strat costs. It's a no brainer.

I liked it so much (more than the KX despite being half the price) that I decided to try the top of the range. The M Custom and the Z Custom:

And they blew me away. Piezo pickup on the M, Duncans, excellent hardware.
The playability is outstanding, the tones were thick as hell, and I didn't try the piezo but it's evident how it should work.

And they're GORGEOUS.
They look cheesy on the pictures (way too much light or something, WTF?) but trust me, they look good.

Price? A bit steeper than the top axes of the PRS SE Series. An excellent price if you ask me.

I was baffled by how good these guitars are. The M520 particuarly kicked my ass hard, I loved those P90s.
The price/quality ratio is ridiculous.
Give these guitars a shot if you have a dealer nearby, guys.

Havne't Cort been doing contract manufacturing for a lot of the more-recognized brands for a long time -- like Ibanez, LTD, Schecter, Epiphone before the Chinese factory?

Yup. I imagine that's why they can get away with stuff like this Ibanez R... sorry, I mean this double cut shreddy beast here :D :

They are built in Indonesia I think. I couldn't care less about that fact. They're sick.

They have GREAT videos of each model, too.

Re: Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

I remember when Dean came out with the Batio and Cooley guitars. A few months later, Cort seemed to come out with their own...

Can't find the Cort "Cooley" but it was nearly identical to this:

Wow, that is nice.

Re: Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

Yeah Strat, LP, and any other household name guitar are way overpriced. Image is the only thing Cort lacks, even now with Matthias Jabs and Gene Simmons endorsing it.

Rumor has it that this Indonesian company actually builds Schecter guitars for the US market. Check it out: http://www.artrockguitars.com/

But their own brand, some of which are identical to ESP horizons, except the headstock, is way cheaper with comparable quality.

Re: Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

I had a cort m-200, the lowest of the line. I hated that thing with passion.

Re: Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

It's usually a good idea to go to the source.

Want a custom shop, hot rod, 80's California styled guitar? Charvel or Jackson.
Want the "classic" singlecut? Les Paul.
Want a decent import that's easy on your wallet? Why not Cort? They make guitars for lots of companies anyways.

Another one that's been in my radar have been the FGN guitars. Fujigen made, Fujigen branded. No extra brand labels raising the price. I'd love to try some out.

That said, has Cort improved the way they treat their employees?

Re: Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

They build entry/mid-level guitars for Schecter, Ibanez, Fender, Ltd etc. It's funny their labour/union troubles only started when they seriously launched their own line of guitars a few years ago

I have that mean snakeskin shred machine Diego posted in the link up there btw (pups switched for Blackout neck/Backout Single/Blackout metal bridge) & it's a joy to play...

Hell yes! I'd take gugun signature's quality over MIM strats any day. They're cheap as squier too.
Guys if you like blues, take a listen to the guy's music, definitely one of the best blues guitarist in asia (outside japan).

Now back at Cort, I'm considering to get their 5 string bass. The one I tried at music store was build pretty well, but they have agathis body, which from what I read is a bad tonewood..

You guys know Cort is a Old Line , right? Made Japanese guitars in the 70's right up through the 80's and into the new Millenium. Some really cool ones too.
I had a recent production Korean Cort 'Matt Murphy' guitar that was a fun guitar and sounded good.

I remember the comparison between the MABs and the equivalent Cort. It's pretty obvious. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the new (ish) Dean 6 inline hs was Cort.

Wow, that is nice.

Sure is.:eyecrazy:

I want Source BV for so long but haven't found one yet in local stores.

They've been making the Fender Special Editions for years. I've got two of them. Seymour Duncan pups and every bit as good as my American Standard.

Oh my god resisting temptation to import a Cort M520.

That thing is gorgeous.

Re: Tried some Cort guitars yesterday. Great stuff coming from them.

I find the Cort stuff is good once you get into the $300+ range. My friend has a mid-range Cort classical with cutaway and electronics that sounds great. I've been around a lot of Corts thanks to the gig I had in the music store.
