Tried some guitars today...

Cat In The Hatministrator
As a few of you know, I am coming to the end of my RAF career, and I am planning to buy myself a guitar as a leaving gift to myself. I have a limit of £1000 and I'm still not certain on what I want.

I went to Anderton's store in Guildford this afternoon to try a couple that I've had my eye on.

The member of staff that helped me out, Matt, was great and we had a good chat about what I was after and what to try.

I tried out a white Gibson SG Standard, one of the newer ones with the smaller scratchplate, a seafoam green PRS S2 Mira, and a black ESP Eclipse II with EMG's. All 3 were put through a JCM 2000 DSL1 1W combo (what a fun little amp that is!)

The SG yielded exactly what you'd expect, all those classic crunchy tones were there and it was well set up. From warm and mellow, to spiky and crunchy I had great fun, while avoiding playing AC/DC cliches!! :)

The Eclipse was a great guitar to play, but just felt a little flat, a lot less bass response, which I'm guessing is probably the EMG's. I'm not sure what EMG's they were, and I don't have a lot of experience with them, but I was left feeling there should have been more from the guitar.

The Mira was great fun, very alive and vibrant with a great range of tones, ergonomically designed and comfortable to play. I had so much fun just with the 3-way switch and utilising the volume and tone that I totally forgot that it has a coil-split and didn't realise until I was on my way home! I'm not a great technical player, and a lot of my technique is very sloppy, but I felt I was sounding better with the Mira, even coaxing pinch-harmonics at will!

Hopefully in the next few weeks Anderton's will be getting a couple of S2 Starlas in, as I'm quite keen on comparing that with the Mira. I tried one of the original Starlas a couple of years ago and really liked it.

All in all and good way to spend a Friday afternoon.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

I was in there on Saturday. I walked away with the bg250, a Boss volume pedal, and one of those mini Fuzzfaces (red one). I'm interested in the S2 stuff myself, but am waiting to see whether the range expands - I'd like to see a Singlecut added to the range.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Good stuff Stevie and I'm sure you'll find the one. These days you'll get a hell of a lot of guitar for that kind of money! Just tonight I saw a really nice Patrick Eggle guitar and immediately thought of you.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

I have to say Don, it's nice to plan and shop without the usual financial constraints that I have. I realised a long time ago that I will probably never own a PRS Custom 22 or a Custom Shop Fender, but I'm ok with that. I've always had to be very canny with my purchases, so it's nice to have a bit more freedom. I know that buying a £1000 is nothing to some people, but it's a big purchase for me, and as you pointed out you can get a hell of a lot of guitar for that money these days. I mean, a US-made PRS for £995?? :D

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Well Stevie if it's any consolation I have been somewhat cavalier with cash over the years but not so these days! A £1000 cash is a lot bargaining power at the moment and you will get one hell of a guitar for the money. FWIW if a PRS C22 or CS Fender is what you're after if you look hard enough you will find those for around the money you have available. Good luck with the shopping and keep us informed.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Yeah, I'm definitely keeping an eye out for any bargains Don. I think that I needed to know whether PRS was a route I'd take, having stuck to 'Fender' templates for the most part. The more I think about it, the more I see myself with a PRS-type instrument. Of course, the 'Brand-X' guitar-of-a-lifetime might be just around the corner that will knock all of the other options off the table! :D

Aren't guitars great?? :)

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Deals on 2nd hand PRS guitars ARE out there: if you're patient enough to wait for them!! :D

Re: Tried some guitars today...

I play all sorts of stuff, from classic rock, blues to new wave and disco...my last project was covering early 80's stuff, particularly synth-based tunes and translating those to guitar.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

I'm not in the best financial situation at the moment, but when things are better, I'm thinking about getting an SG. I want a Les Paul but I need something light because I have bad back problems. Are the new SG's neck-heavy?

I picked up a new Standard in March 2012 and find it balances very well on a strap. I don't notice it doing the neck dive thing at all.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Is the weight of an LP hurting your back or giving you problems.
My guitar playing friend. Step right up, Gibson has the perfect guitar for you. And it is the SG Standard.
Let me confide in you, I sold a 3 pickup LP due to this very problem.
And Gibson stepped up to the plate and offered a solution to my problem.
I have an early 2013 SG Standard.
Don't have any nosedive problems with this guitar. It balances well on the strap, but I have wide straps due to the weight of my other guitars.

Hope things work out Drunken Bowling and may a good score comes your way.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Sir, first, congratulations on your service. I was really digging Brett Kingman, also a Brit, when I saw this PRS model that had two of these neck and middel P-90 style pickups that sound incredible on the clips. Then a fat sounding bridge bucker.
Ive seen these PRS pickups on otehr guitars, and they really have a fantastic edge.

He's not a Brit, he's Australian.

That's a very important distinction during this time of Ashes Series cricket.

Which leads me to think that a Maton Mastersound model might be worth investigating ... they're great guitars. Check out the range under 'Electric Guitars' ...
