Tried some guitars today...

Re: Tried some guitars today...

The new SG Standard certainly wasn't neck heavy, but if you haven't played an SG before you do have to adjust your playing position. It can feel like the guitar is sitting too far to the left initially, but once you've sorted that out it's fine, and a great playing and sounding guitar.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

I really like what Gibson did with the new SG's.

As for PRS...
I'm not sure I'd make a Bigsby guitar my be all end all. They seem less stable than the PRS stop tail bridge. When it's set perfectly, the guitar will never sound out of tune.
With the McCarty type bridge, the guitar really sings. It's lightweight aluminum, and is coupled to the wood just perfectly. If Ted McCarty left us anything worth knowing, it's that his McCarty bridge is the best sounding bridge to attach to maple/mahogany. And interestingly enough, the Seth Lover sounds great in that design.

Aluminum is not the ideal metal for a stoptail. Its purely an economic covenience. On my Paul, I plan on getting a Solid Steel Callaham TOM/Stoptail as soon as possible.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

I was very impressed with the new SG Standard. It gave exactly what you'd expect, and the build was excellent. Joe, from what I've heard the tuning stabilty on the Starla's Bigsby is surprisingly stable. I wouldn't necessarily use a Bigsby a lot, and it would be a concern and I'll hopefully get an idea when I try it out soon.

I haven't made my mind up completely on what I want yet, I'm still working through various makes and models to help with my decision.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

My starla was a nightmare for tuning problems. Sounddwise the guitar did not do it for me, but the tuning issues wold have had me blocking the bigsby or rellacing it, if the tone was right.

It needs a roller bridge to help things.. Keep that extra expense in mind. Also it really needs more stout posts for the nashville style bridge, mine used to flex as the string tension was relaxed/tightened. You could see the bridge tilt fwd and back. IDK if that is status quo for a bigsby but if so, that is a crappy design.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

This is of no help to your new guitar search but your avatar rocks stevie_bees! Can't wait for the xmas episode.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Any thoughts on the Gibson SG Diablo Floyd Rose?? I'm not sure, but there's something about it...

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Do you still have the Fret-King Esprit? I cannot help thinking that an SG is going to be too similar - even one with a locking vibrato system.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Yeah, I've still got the Esprit, and I'm also wondering how compromised the headstock strength/stability would be with the locking nuts...

I've had a look at a couple of Hamer's when they've shown themselves, which isn't too often, and they could be in the running as could the Tokai's.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Go play a USA made EVH Wolfgang hardtail model. You'll probably come home with it.

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Actually it's nice to have enough money to be able to shop at a price-point that gives so much choice...

Re: Tried some guitars today...

Congrats on your service. I guess the trip for you will be as good as the destination. Try all the guitars you can then buy the one that talks to you.
