The power tubes in your amp run 5 elements (pentode) the switch shorts 2 of them to ground making the tube run like a triode...this is supposed to give you more crunch at a lower volume...I do not like the tone of an amp that has this feature in use...I always leave it in pentode mode.
Yeah, I deffinately like the pentode mode better. I haven't played it in a few months (needs new tubes), but the pentode mode seems to have more mirange crunch.
My hi fi power amps (tube monoblocks) can run in triode or pentode, and pentode just sounds way better to my ears. More bottom end, greater dynamic range, and less strain.

Doesn't triode mode cut down the power in half?
A lot of people I know like 100w versions of an amp more than 50w ones because 100w sounds more massive so perhaps more wattage equals "bigger".
