Trying for Zakks tone

I'm trying to get a Zakk like tone without going to Emg's. All my LP Custom's are set up with sd 59's and sd customs. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

Closest would be a Duncan Distortion or Custom IMO.

I can get my Duncan Distortion to sound very much like an EMG 81 but it is slightly less compress/hi-fi sounding...but very damn close. Most people couldn't even tell the difference.

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

Setup wise, you´re about as close as you´re gonna get, Like Ranalli asid you may want the somewhat brighter D.Distortion in the bridge, but otherwise.....

Remember also that a big part of Zakk´s tone comes from his (IIRC Modded) JCM800 Marshall and a Boss SD-1, and strings. The plains are pretty normal, but the wounds are real heavy... (GHS Boomers in 10-60 or 11-70, the Zakk Wylde sets)

Zakks LP Customs also have Maple necks instead of Mahogany, that´s a good portion brighter and snappier than Mahogany.....

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

Thanks for the input. I'll give the Distortion some thought. One other question...neck or bridge with the distortion?

Hey Twisted you can't look like that there can only be one ha!
He can have it, I´m changing soon anyway ;)

bridge @ Distortion. The ´59 in the neck is about as close to an EMG 85 as the SD pallette gets (tonally) ;)

Although I have to admit, I can´t understand why everyone uses the 81b/85n setup. I use an 85bridge and an 81 neck, and IMO it kicks much more ass much harder ;)

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

A buddy of mine uses Duncan distortion through a Marshall JCM800 head and In my opinion it gets fairly close. I think he has a '59 in the neck possition, and a Duncan Distortion in the bridge on his Les Paul Custom. I think you could get really close if you use his signature pedal with a Duncan Distortion. A JCM 800 would be bonus aswell.

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

So you giys think bridge wise the DD would be closer to a 85 in the bridge then a Custom (SH-5)?

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

Sorry dident even read any of the posts. 1 LP w/ EMG81-85, 2 Marshall JCM800, 3 MXR ZW-44, & 4-10 a bunch of badass chopps, oh yeh. To be the man, you got to beat the man.

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

duncan distortion loaded LP into a JCM 800 2203 with 6550 power tubes into a 4x12 EV loaded cab
with a boss OD-1 :)

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

i think u should just get a DS1 (i thoguth ZW used these!!??) and run it thru a gainy amp

u should be able to get somthing close

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

Thanks a lot for all the input. It looks like the customs are getting loaded with distortions. Already got the call into the shop.

I'm pretty sure the Wilde Overdrive has replaced the Boss SD-1, seeing as the Wilde Overdrive is just a modified SD-1 to begin with.

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

I get pretty close to Zakks tone with my Demon loaded SG's and my modded Randall tube amp. My sound is just a little fuller than Zakks. The JB might be another good choice for a bridge pup if your lookin for harmonically rich sound.

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

staying duncan i wuld guess a distortion probably. How would an ivader compare its output is intnese as loud as an active p/u?

Re: Trying for Zakks tone

How are the lows and mids on the Duncan Distortion? I heard a clip of someone on the board here who used a DD on a classic rock song and it sounded great. I know Randy Rhoads used DD in his Les Paul I believe. I want my bridge to scream and be heavy but as brite as my 81 in my other LP. I was thinking Custom or DD. Inader seems over the top.
