Trying something new and I think I Been Had

King Midas to Cheap Guitars
I think the reason I stayed with the Strats for so long was because I liked being able to have the action set super low. Went back and forth on tune-o-matics but since I don't trust myself enough to recess them a bit, I think it's time to go back to Strat-style saddles. Some of these hardtail Ibanez guitars are REALLY nice playing. Oddly enough, I think I like the cheaper bridges over their Gibraltar ones.

Neck pickup is just installed for looks - it's an Epiphone OEM pickup with the magnet removed. (Grabbed the spacers too, figure I can use that in something one of these days. :D ) Single volume knob installed where the tone knob would go so I don't hit it by accident, carriage bolt installed in the extra hole. Not sure what I'm going to end up doing with the slot for the switch, I'll think of something to dress it up. Entwistle Nemesis installed in the bridge, hits like a sledgehammer.

RG321? I did the same volume trick with my old RG - much better further away.

Re: Trying something new and I think I Been Had

good idea moving the knob and the carriage bolt looks nice and clean.

This one is actually an RG2EX2. Almost the same thing, but with a basswood body rather than mahogany and dot inlays rather than sharktooth. I've got a couple of RG321s here that I'll be putting together over the next few days. Just need to get replacement bridges, those came with the cosmo chrome ones and the coloring is really worn on them. (Got the guitars pretty cheap though, so can't complain too much.)

Jusging fron the resessed TOM part, is it possible that you mean low neck angle? because the action is the distance of the string relative to the fretboard, and is irrelevant of bridge type...

I ask becasue someone that doesn`t know the difference may be reading and become confused :)

Re: Trying something new and I think I Been Had

I dunno man, I really like the Gilbraltar custom bridge, but I agree on the TOM style. The more I play flat guitars (FR/Fender trem) the more the TOM body angle bothers me. The Xiphos with the Gibraltar doesn't have near the angle that my Eclipse does.

Re: Trying something new and I think I Been Had

My RG321 has dot inlays rather than sharktooth style. I left the volume control as is. The lower control is my EMG-SPC mid booster.

Well, I was talking about the height of the actual bridge over the body and my *hand* angle, so I guess that's what I meant. ;)

All of the Gibraltars I've come across have been cosmo chrome and the coloring was wearing off. Seriously manufacturers - use black or chrome. The cosmo/smoke black chrome just doesn't work. It rubs off and leaves chrome anyway.

You are correct. The RG321 does have dots, the RG3EX series has sharktooth inlays. I've got a few of those here too.

Re: Trying something new and I think I Been Had

I've always been tempted to try a Wilkinson flat mount on one of those...

They do make black ones, they came on the ill fated V and they made an Iceman with it. I priced a replacement, lolz, I could buy an OG Edge for what they want for it. I sanded down the funk and, um, spray painted the cosmo bridge. I'm putting black "battleworn" BK's in it, so I think the bridge will look cool when the black inevitably scratches and flakes off too.

I hate the cosmo too.

I just put together a black one, and I've got 6 more bodies and 5 more necks here. :D

I need to get some more black tuners and just ordered some black hard tail bridges, so it will be a little while before I finish putting the rest together. I've got another white one that'll be getting a purple Steve Morse pickup as soon as I get some purple paint to paint a neck pickup to match. ;)
