Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

That's why you always ship guitars in padded (preferably hard shell) cases. Then put that in a cardboard box with packaging materials.

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

Further inspection shows some damage to the hard shell case

I think something heavy had been dropped on it as the controls/knobs were right under that point.

A second ticket is always worth it when flying . Then seatbelt it in .

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

Let us know how the airline chooses to handle this.

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

Looks like they dropped the corner of something heavy right on the "perfect" spot to impact the pots and cave in that thinner part of the top. That it landed right there is just freakishly bad juju. Sorry for the loss.

This is probably just my f'd up way of thinking but with the way that damage occured, I'd play the lottery figuring I may be due for a reversal of the bad mojo. Worst case, I'm out a couple more bucks ...

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

That just sucks. Even if they offer compensation, it just sucks.

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

Oh man....sorry bro. That sucks.
Have you contacted the airline about it yet? Keep us posted, please.

Just been a really bad day, while the rest of the week was great (saw slayer live and got to finally play through my Boneshaker)
But today, cancelled flight then rebooked in such a way that I miss my train and once I finally get home my guitar is in this condition it just sucks.

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

I haven't read the United contract of carriage lately, but my recollection is that anything other than an ATA approved case absolves them of any responsibility.

I didn’t use United for the flight, my united flight was given to Swiss airlines to deal with.

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

If I have a choice between blaming the Swiss, or Newark....well, that's not a hard thing to figure out.

And - if shipping - there is a reason they are called "Flight" cases.

That Ibby hardshell is fine for everyday gigging/banging around, but as said - the extra seat or the flight case. OR - if possible, gig bag and jacket closet.

And I bet good luthier can make that right at a decent price.

Re: TSA/United/Swiss airlines guitar damage

Stuff like that happens easily with that sort of a case. Those are relatively flimsy cases for that purpose, especially when it comes to protection from that sort of an impact (to the flats of the case). Hell; they aren't even that good when touring by automobile, even with careful roadies. They're good for home storage, and for light/easy transport to and from gigs. I suggest not checking anything fragile unless it is in a true flight case. I would be surprised if the airline did anything about it, but if you get through to the right person, you never know. I'm not surprised that happened. On a positive note, at least it didn't kill the guitar. It can be fixed.

I knew what this was.

Swiss contracts out ground handling, they don't have enough flights to warrant directly employing ground handling staff.
