tube sound in stomp box

Except for maybe pedals based on the circuitry in some of the modeling amps, I don't think there is a stomp box that will actually make a solid state amp sound and feel like a tube amp. Not if you really know tubes and tube amps. It's just a marketing ploy... Lew

+1 !!!

Re: tube sound in stomp box

The POD and J-Station come close. The V-Twin is too compressed, which is what happens when preamp tubes get distorted, like in most Mesas and all amps with a master volume (even the cleans)...you get buzzy, non-dynamic preamp tube distortion. This is not the tube sound that older guys talk about. There are devices that take small *power* amp tube and jolt it with a few hundred volts. *This* is the sound you want.
Most tube pedals apply 12 volts to a preamp tube...you know what? People buy it because it says 'Tube' on it. You are better off getting a low watt tube amp.

Or, use your ears and don't worry about how it gets it sound.

funny you should say that. the vtwin is a hybrid design, with both tubes and opamps, plus a nifty diode clipping stage. the clean section is all SS. check out a schem.

He's right.
