Tubes and Speakers!!

OK!! First of all, i'm after a nice tube set. I'm thinking, something like a JJ, but, its not really going into a 'high gain' amp, just something that can do/handel alittle crunch ( if i want distortion desperatly enough i will use a pedal ).
And for speakers, I was thinking something like an Celestion Blue, but something with a bit more Watts ( the Blue is 15, i was thinking somewhere 30 +). Its going into my Laney VC112 ( again ).
Any idea's?

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

JJ's are very fine tubes IMO, mail Bob (www.eurotubes.com), he'll certainly help you with choosing the right ones..

They say that Weber Blue Dog speaker is based on Alnico Blue, but many guys here would recommend you going for G12H30...

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

I thought the VC 30s were rigged so you could only use sovtek tubes or something? Maybe it was a dif model, but i thought i better say something.

yeah, the ceramic Blue Dog might be worth considering, since it's more affordable, and comes in 15, 30, and 50 watt versions.

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

Celestion is making a speaker called the Gold now. Their description says it is tonally equivelent to the Blue, but 50 watts.

Yugo power tubes (Ei). Only the EL84 Laney's.

Sovtek's are rrrrrr-usian. :)

hnmmmmm im cause my amp is rated at 30W, the 50W should be ok..and i might try those higher gain tubes to push it alittle..i mean, i can get a decent clean sound if i dont put the od/gain up to much...i'm liking it... but if the Alnico blue is like 700 bucks australian..and the gold is 50 watts...im not looking forward to the cost!

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

A 30 watt rms rated speaker generally is okay for a 30 watt rms output amp.

The G12H30 or the Weber Blue Dog (30 watt version) would probably be okay. It just depends if you want an alnico speaker response or a ceramic speaker response in your tone. The G12H30 is the ceramic Celestion most noted to sound closest to the original alnico Celestion G12, if a lower cost ceramic alternative is desired.

With ceramic magnet speakers the breakup is more crunchy and less compressed so having the speaker rating somewhat higher than the amp output (per speaker) may be desirable. With alnico magnet speakers the breakup properties they are noted for, comes from having the speaker handling more closely match the rms output from the amp.

The thing about alnico speakers, is the different breakup properties compared to ceramic speakers. As the alnico magnet speaker is pushed into breakup the properties of the alnico magnet causes a compression of the higher harmonics.

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

Thanks! i think the 50W Alnico Gold will be the trick, with some JJ's, still tossing up either to get the high gain one's, or the more 'clean' one's.

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

I reccomend:
JJ power tubes (got balls, nice sound)
EH preamp tubes (sweet musical sounding preamp tube)

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

Yeah, i was thinking either the Ei Eleite Gold tubes, or Electro Harmonic EH's. Apparantly the EH's are good for vox amps, and since that's the sound i'm going for...

i was very pleased with Electro Harmonix tubes
Agreed to that. My JCM900 is having those tubes in replacement for the 5881.
I think they are great tubes, otherwise I would use tungsol for 5881

Re: Tubes and Speakers!!

Yeah, i'm going for a more VOX style sound/tube, not a marshal sound ( hence the celestion blue/gold ) so i think the Eh one's would be the better bet
