Tuners:Vintage Gibson Vs. Grovers

I just switched my Les Paul Special DC Faded's tuners for a set of Grover Rotomatics and while there is a noticeable weight/sustain difference, I find the tone doesn't have the same bounce to it. I guess less resonance?? It's just more 'leaden' sounding to me... Would a nickle set sound better than these chrome ones? Isnt chrome a plastic? Or maybe a set of mini Rotos? These also look kinda big on the Les Paul DC Faded. My main problem with the Gibson Deluxe tuners is the guitar never seems to actally get in tune. Weird. There's always some kind of warble going on. Nut has already been changed to a Tusq.

Re: Tuners:Vintage Gibson Vs. Grovers

I've never heard of sustain/tone changing after a tuner change (unless the stock tuners were garbage and the change is an improvement). Are you sure you didn't fudge up the setup or something?

You will experience absolutely no difference switching to nickel plating. The nickel is so thin you can easily scratch it off with a pocket knife. It has no effect on tone whatsoever.

As for chrome being a plastic ... uh, no. It's definitely a metal. Have a look at the Periodic Table of the Elements one of these days. :)

Switching from the stock Deluxes to heavy Grovers does change the tone of the guitar...it changed the tone of my old SG. I wouldn't say it affects sustain per se, but it definitely does compress the tone. Deluxes are more "airy", heavier tuners help produce a more "solid", compressed tone.

"The Les Paul Forum" is a place where your observation is agreed upon, many times. I pass no judgement, as I love higher gain end of the electric guitar spectrum.

The plating has no effect.

The Les Paul Forum:

A lot of "warble" is caused by pickups set too close to the strings...espescially while fretting the upper registers of the neck. Drop the neck pickup down, and much of the warble may go away.

Re: Tuners:Vintage Gibson Vs. Grovers

The difference is huge to me. This is playing without being plugged in. More dense, compressed, leaden, dead. The notes don't pop the same.
I was thinking maybe chrome might be more muted than nickle but.... probably just a pure mass issue. I know Lew agrees on this. Lew, where are you?
I'm wondering how I can get the smooth feel of the Grovers but the sound of the Kluson type.

Re: Tuners:Vintage Gibson Vs. Grovers

Tuners mosdef make a difference, sometimes huge.

Which tuners did you have on the DC originally? Got a pic? You might have to change them anyway. The Schaller made vintage ones come apart pretty quickly, the Gotoh ones do not. If the ferrule has a hex head you're best off replacing them anyway because they will come apart att eh worst time, Murphy's Law.

Re: Tuners:Vintage Gibson Vs. Grovers

I just placed the Grovers in the Trading Post for sale , $28.00+ a couple bucks to ship. Thanks for the info folks.

That's been my experience as well.

Replacing the "Klusons" on my Red Les Paul with Grovers was one of the biggest gear mistakes I've ever made.

Yep. That's what happens when you switch from Kluson type tuners to Grovers. The more solid construction of the Grovers and the extra weight changes the tone a little. Some players prefer the tone change...some don't.
