Tweed Crunch in a box

hey all - now that I sold my OCD and Fulltone Fulldrive II and maybe will be selling some other stuff (definitely my crybaby, maybe my Vox amp and my GT-8 because I don't use them at all), I will have some extra cash after I get the pickups. Now, I was toying with the idea of getting another drive box - but I gotta make sure it is a "be all end all" one for me. The OCD was too british sounding and too "hi fi" sounding in some situations. The Fulldrive was too tube screamer-ish and didn't compliment a Les Paul too well IMO. How bout something in the middle? Does anyone have any suggestions for a pedal that will give me some big american drive tones without being too midrangy and nasally like a tube screamer? Thanks. I dont know if I would actually get it because I always like the amp's distortion, but it is always good to know what I would go after if I decide to pull the trigger on a drive box. alright thanks dudes.

Ok, there are a few you could look into...

HAO makes one, the same people that make the V-Stack make one too not to mention Im sure a dozen or more boxes that are trying to get that cranked tweed tone in a box...

haha thanks. I'll check those out. BTW, I am getting a Tweed champ in the near future. As soon as I dump my GA5, its not working too well and after playing the Tweed Twin for 4 months straight, going back to the 1x8 GA5 sounds very thin and fuzzy. I'll get a Tweed Champ with a 12 inch speaker (an alnico weber that is - my favorite!) to thicken the tones up plus I'll have the 6V6s instead of the EL84s which I totally lost my taste for. Either that or a Deluxe, but it will probaby be the champ so I get get the most gain out of it. Twin for big clean and slight break up, Champ for Layla tones.

I have tried some of the HAO pedals and thoght there very well made and sounded great but I never tried the tweed voiced one, someone on the forum (I forget who) has (and really likes) the V Tweed or whatever it's called...there is always the Boss 4x10 bassman pedal:headbang: :rolleyes:

Maybe check out the Clark/Barber gainster pedal! Its got a tweed snarl to it and not compressed like a tube screamer!

If someone designs tweed crunch in a box, they should put a little Cap'n Crunch cartoon guy on it with his hat made out of tweed. Yeah, that's what I'd do. I love cap'n crunch.

Well, on one hand you're saying tweed while on the other hand you say "big american drive tones" and to me the tweed sound is not really all that broken up. So for that reason I wonder if you've tried the Twin Tube Classic. It doesn't have the Tube Screamer nasal sound (unless you cut the bass) and it purrs a lot like a Tweed that's really overdriven on the front end, like a tweed driven with a clean boost for example. And it sounds more like an amp than a "screamer".

Also that V-Tweedy pedal is pretty good. To me that had the more brittle top end of a tweed under less gain, but I don't know if that's exactly what you're looking for. Like, do you want the pedal to create the complete sound and feed the clean amp, or would there be some drive to your amp?

I guess a little bit of both. My Tweed Twin is pretty damn clean, so it will be at a very slightly broken up level. Basically if you smack it you get a bit of dirt and when you go really gently its perfectly clean. But for the most part, a pedal into a clean amp. I'm not really sure what I am going to get next - I still want a good wah pedal, considering a clean boost and then there is the possibility of getting the drive pedal. I won't be too specific as to exactly what tones I want, but basically, just an american flavored overdrive (really crunchy and broken up or not) that is not tube screamer related.

See that's where I wonder if the Twin Tube isn't better than a Tweed replica box, since then you'd have a compounding of the top end breakup. Like both the tweed pedal and the amp would have that square wave, white noise style distortion on the pick attack when you really dug in. Together it might sound to crispy-crunchy. So then you'd turn the treble down on the pedal, and lose some of the clarity.

Or just get the Pickup Booster for starts and see if that amp doesn't give you enough "purr" when you slam the front end. Then again you can still get a nice tube driven clean boost out of the Twin Tube if you set the gain low enough. There's plenty of master output headroom.

How about the Toadworks Mr. Leo? Also, the Kaden Flamingo Fuzz/Tonefactor Mule is a great OD tone at lower gain settings. I could see it being described as tweed, but maybe to hi-fi for you.

I've found that OD's react differently to different tube amps with varying natural gain.

My advise is to find a boutiquey store that sells a bunch, and bring your amps and money with you. Tell the owner you plan on most likely buying one, then wheeling your amps/guitars in. Spend 3 hours there with your gear, auditioning a bunch. It'll be self evident as soon as you find the one that reacts perfectly with your gear. That's a better answer than suggesting a be all end all pedal. I've never done that, but next time I buy an OD pedal, I'm going to.

Professor Tweed is a DIY circuit at runoffgroove.com. I love the soundclips and plan to try this as my first DIY project:)
The Tonefactor MUle has also been described a tweedin a box
