Two JSX Clips!

Re: Two JSX Clips!

the difference is clear ,the tihtness and lifeless sound of 81 is easy to hear i think. And needless to say ,the JB has more punch ,even it has less lows!

Less lows isn't a bad thing when considering that that's where the bass fits in the frequency spectrum! Same with low tunings, too much bass ruins it.

But those clips sound well nice (again), so I am well happy at having got one of these heads :)

Re: Two JSX Clips!

That said, the difference is so subtle, I'm not sure any of you will actually be able to tell the difference, especially on computer speakers.

I can hear the difference, but I've got the good headphones at work today.

Alone I prefer the JB because there seems to be a little more mid-range girth and it's clearly a bit warmer. That may change once bass and vocals are added in the mix. They are very close, though. A lot closer than I would have anticipated based on what I know of the two pickups. How different are the two guitars you used in the two recordings?

Do you program your drums? I want to say I've seen you post that before, but cannot recall. If so, what are you using if you don't mind my asking. If not, I apologize profusely to your drummer. ;)

BTW, love the half-time feel of the cymbol work just past the halfway mark. :headbang:

Re: Two JSX Clips!

Your new amp sounds bigger, tighter, and a bit more brittle than your 5150.
Definately more agressive.
Again JB >> 81. It's just warmer and smoother.

Re: Two JSX Clips!

I just got a JSX, and it is just awesome, really good tones, really easy tio dial in as well, with all the channels usable.

Now I've heard the clips with the 808 in front, i may have to get me one!

Is that you James? How's it goin man! Been a bit since I've seen ya round sot2 :)

Re: Two JSX Clips!

That sounds fantastic. I like more of a Marshally-flavor myself but I KNOW good metal tone when I hear it and that first clip is sick as hell. You might want to tame some of the frequencies at 80zh and below on the guitars, but that's nitpicking.

Your playing is really tight as well - I always enjoy your clips. Miles ahead of your peers, dude.

\m/ Thanks again guys!

Using DFHS for drums, as usual.

I'm going to try an 85 in the bridge today - I remember absolutely loving it before, but switching to the 81 because it had more grind and a super super tight low end... but I'm not sure I really need the metallic-ness that goes with it.

Both guitars were in Mahogany body, Maple/rosewood set-neck Schecter C-1's - basically no difference between the two axes aside from the tree's used to make 'em!

The whole thing has been sounding a bit dull to me, gotta try upping the presence or treble later today. (only on lunch break :()

Re: Two JSX Clips!

Sounds a hell of a lot less buzzy than a 5150.

Surely the tightest, most fitting tone you've ever had, nice work.

Re: Two JSX Clips!

85 clip uploaded: Updated original post!

Alright - in the room, and tweaking settings around a bit... the 85 is the clear winner for me. Tighter than the JB with the same punch to it, and defined like the 81 but without the lack of bass or metallic feel to it.

dude, I am still puting all of my money on JB, just re-listened to all of it, and the first clip will give KK and Glenn a run for their money, I just love how pronounced and crisp those palm-mutes are with JB. AWESOME !!!

Re: Two JSX Clips!

Hmmm...now this complicates things ;).

The 85 on its own is sounding better than both the 81 and the JB alone right now...but I'm digging the JB+85 mixes the most at the moment. Can't say that anything with an 81 in it is really doin anything for me.

I kinda liked how you played that second riff on the JB mix. Gave it a bit more power.

Re: Two JSX Clips!

OWNAGE. Now onto which one sounds the best: I prefer the JB I think.... But it and the 85 both sound GREAT.

JB sounds pretty dang good. I just don't get it though - when I used a JB in a thrash setting, it failed miserably, and I yanked it outta my axe fast. even the other guys in the band were looking at me like, what the hell is that sound? it was like rock and roll with no metal. when I replaced it with a duncan distortion, it was a huge improvement for me. but a lot of peeps use the JB, so must be my ears.

Seems like the JB is a very different pickup depending on the guitar it's in. It probably just wasn't well-suited for the guitar you put it in.

Maybe that was it. I put it in an Ibanez RG-550 (I think alder body w/maple neck). All my palm mutes were weak with it, that's all I remember. It did seem like a well-rounded pickup, but at the time I wanted to rage and it wanted to play some Jeff Beck. I'm wondering though if it's one of those things where maybe it's not the best sound to the player's ears but it sits in mixes well and cuts through live too, ya know?

Re: Two JSX Clips!

damn! how come i cant get my jsx to sund like that!? what are your settings there mr!?

very tight playing by the way, i love it. perhaps i should invest in this 808 device...

Re: Two JSX Clips!

jb sounds awesome. I dont like the brittleness and harshness of ceramic or active but that is just me. great playing & awesome amp for your style. Thanks for the clips - pretty entertaining!!

Re: Two JSX Clips!

Here's a fun little test...

Same riff, same settings, same mix, different pickups:

JB:

81:

I seriously, seriously need to do some more testing... might end up mixing them. I also really want to try an 85 again with this setup.

i could tell. the 81 has a kakakakkaka on the palm mutes that the jb does not have. i hear the jb to be wamer than the 81.
