Two Wires One Humbucker

I was wondering if it was possible to use two different types of wire in one humbucker. I know about mismatched coils with two different windings of gauges but what about using say formvar on one coil and enamel for the other? Has this been done before? I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything. I can't be the first to think of this, right? How would it sound?

Re: Two Wires One Humbucker

There is certainly a difference in the insulation thickness between coatings......and those who have experience in winding pickups will certainly tell you that this will affect the overall outcome.
But these same experts in the field of what actually happens in pickup winding will also tell you that the wind is more important than the insulation type in determining or influencing the pickup's tone.

Hybrid pickups have been made. But how many humbuckers are wound with Formvar to do a hybrid with?

Insulation type, i.e. Formvar or plain enamel don't matter. They all sound the same unless they are different thicknesses. Heavy build insulation sounds similar to the next wire gauge size down.

If it's the same thickness then poly (spn), formvar, and PE all sound the same.

I suppose you can mix heavy and single build wire. But the difference is less than if you use two different wire gauges.

DiMarzio has been using two different wire gauges for years. They had a patent on that, which has since expired.

I make pickups with two different gauge wire. Been doing that for about 10 years now.
