Uli John Roth

Re: Uli John Roth

hello resurrection time, cause I need you guys' help.
I am working to play the solo of this song "Sails of Charon" and I have the following problems :
1) I got the SC strat, white, maple, I am OK in the looks dept, still working on the tone. I know he used wah pedal but I can't seem to nail this no matter what, but my hardware is very limited, just a poor me-25 boss multieffect ...
2) the technique. This struggle I must fight alone I guess.
3) I am curious about how the hell did he manage to have no hum/noise with those single coils. If I turn on the compressor or the boost/overdrive or even the wah then noise gets out of hand. If I increase the noise gate settings then the attack is heavily affected and it sucks. Ok, I could always go grab some humbucker guitar (I have 5), but still I'd like to know how all those ppl (e.g. Rory Gallagher) managed to tame the noise.

1) I read an interview with Uli somewhere where he essentially stated that he (manually) doubled all of his tracks to thicken the thin strat tone.
AFAIK, he used stock strat, stock amps, etc...

2) Yep

3) studio magic (seriously). Judicial usage of EQ after the guitar tracks were layed down, etc... hi-pass / lo-pass, etc...
Always remember any guitar you hear on "record" has been processed through studio equipment and tricks/techniques.

Re: Uli John Roth

Thank you LLL! I am sure I read somewhere about a wah cry baby, and I am sure he was using it on this track, just minimally but its presence is audible enough. Anyways, I found no way to emulate that. I'll go with what I got. Thanx about the nose gate hints.
