I've used the black Jazz IIIs for year and like them a lot. I took a standard size Ultex the other day and filed the tip the same as the Jazz IIIs. At first I didn't care for the sound when the pick fist hits the string, but now I don't notice it. I wanted to try out a different material, plus I wanted to see if using a larger pick mite make it easier to do pick scrapes and such. I really like the feel of the Ultex in my fingers and it glides over the string smoother. Have since picked up some yellow Jazz III Ultexs, and want to try the Petrucci, Hetfield, Ultrex Sharp, and black 2.0 Ultex Jazz IIIs....if I can find them!

They are the only pick i have used for the last 5 years. Here is why:
1. Perfect size
2. Perfect thickness
3. Perfect tip pointyness
4. Perfect material
5. Perfect grip (roughness on the sides)
I play shred-ish style of music. But i use this pick for all kinds of fast strumming as well. So it's not just a good lead pick.
It's funny. My wife made me this gigantic valentines day card. And it has a heart made out of 20+ red Jazz IIIs.... It's freaken awesome. I wouldn't take picks off of there though...

I love the maxgrips for the grip, the tortex for the price, and the ultex for the sound. I don't see why anyone would get the regular jazz iii's without the maxgrip.

Petrucci's are super slick off the strings. Great for sweeps. Regular playing, I'll stick with the 2.0 Ultex. But the Jazztone 204 is great for filler sounds, ie playing an electric in the background of an acoustic number, just to add some definition/dimensions.

I like the Tortex TIII .88mm for metal rhythm. I do occasionally use tortex Jazz III 1.14 pitch blacks though. I just prefer the full size of the TIII. I don't lilke either red or black nylon Jazz III's. I just tried the carbon fiber Jazz III maxgrip. I like the feel, not the sound. Same gos for the Jazz III XL's.. Nice feel, dont like the tone. I haven't tried the Ultex ones yet. I do like Ultex Sharps though.

I gave up using Jazz picks in general now I just like full size picks for how I play. My three main picks of choice are a .75 Ultex Sharp which is great for anything fast and precise especially thrash, 1.14 Ultex with regular tip which gives a meatier beefier tone and rounds out the high strings but doesn't cut through the strings like the sharp does, and a Big stubby 2.00 which is great for funk and has a bright tone to it but gives a big tone like the ultex 1.14

Yeah, i use both normal jazz III and the ultex, love the ultex for the durability and tone(only my opinion ofc), feels really "full" between my fingers, like the jazz III shape too...buy one and give them a try. A pick is cheap, important, and might be just what youre looking for.
