Value HH tele?

Hey guys,

I am looking for a double humbucker tele. I've been having good luck with Japnanese guitars so far ('78 Greco and '81 Ibanez) but I couldn't find a HH telecaster. I am really happy with the Ibanez Blazer I found for 300 USD, and I was wondering if I could find a similar deal.

Do you have any suggestions? Budget maximum is 400 USD. Doesn't have to be MIJ.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Value HH tele?

The one I immediately thought of was the Fender Blacktop Telecaster:

I'm no Tele expert, but Fender has done a lot of stuff lately with the Blacktop Tele and Modern Player Telecaster to experiment in H-H or even H-S-S configuration. I'm sure there are other options, though, as this one is closer to $500 U.S.

Re: Value HH tele?

Thanks Storm. I've been looking at the blacktop series. They are hard to find used in the UK since they are a new release. I can find some for 500 USD used. A bit over my budget, but I am keeping an eye out.

This is a blackout Tele. Set neck, two Duncan Pearly gates.... I bought it used for $150.00. Its a really good guitar. I had my Luthier buddy put some inlays on the fingerboard and I changed the saddles to graphite but other then that its stock! Plays and sounds great. I am usually a snob for American made guitars, but I have a few made over seas and they are all really good guitars...

Re: Value HH tele?

I was able to assemble an HH Tele for less than $400. If you can find a used body and neck on ebay and you don't mind installing hardware, pickups, etc. yourself then you should give it a go. I've never assembled a guitar before my tele and it turned out to be a piece of cake.

Re: Value HH tele?

You could try the G&L ASAT Deluxe Carved Top. Or the Fender Telecaster FMT. I've owned the Fender, and would like to own it again.

Re: Value HH tele?

I see the Fender FMT teles go for $400 or so in the US all the time. Not sure you're going to find one of them in the UK for that though.

Re: Value HH tele?

Recent examples of the Fender MIM Standard Telecaster are routed under the pickguard to accept a wide variety of possible pickups including humbuckers with long height adjustment lugs and even P90s. So, one pre-owned Tele + a Seymour Duncan Li'l '59 + a vintage output humbucker + a new pickguard would do the trick.

EDIT - If you do not require an entirely accurate Tele outline, there used to be a version of the Yamaha Pacifica 311 that amounted to a budget Mike Stern model. Find one of these and Seymourise it.

The best MIJ HH Telecasters IMO are the mid 80's Contemporary Series, but the prices seem to be going up on those. I used to have one, and it's another on the 'Never Shoulda Sold It' list...

+1!
Hello, first post, reading here a long time.
I own both of these currently, and they are great guitars. I found my FMT Spalted Top Tele used (with case) for $399. The ASAT I bought new with case for $499, you might be able to find used ones for less than your $400. They both play and sound great completely stock.

Re: Value HH tele?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did some quick calculations on putting together a partcaster. Temporarily living in a "student house", I can only use a finished, painted body. I am considering it though. Managed to find a Yamaha Mike Stern model, and an Indie SUper T ITC6. Everything else is out of budget in the UK.

Re: Value HH tele?

What are the differences of a Cabronita tele vs a regular one? Will the pickup holes fit regular sized pickups?

The Fender USA and MIM Cabronita Telecasters are routed for two Gretsch Filter'Tron replica humbuckers via a bare bones control layout - pickup selector and master volume.

The original Custom Shop La Cabronita Especial has a single hot 'Tron replica pickup and an S-1 switch built in to the volume control.

Will the pickup holes fit regular sized pickups?

No. Just Filter'Tron style humbuckers with the mounting screws passing through the pickup casing, directly into the wood beneath. The routs measure 72 x 35mm with rounded off corners. Firebird or Mini humbuckers would fit but you would need a mounting surround to disguise everything.
