Value HH tele?

Re: Value HH tele?

Found a tele made from parts on Gumtree. Specs were sweet, the price was great, the guy was friendly. So I went for it. I hope the bridge were better, but it might prove not to be a problem at all.

I'll put in some SD pups as well.

230 USD shipped.

I hope it's not a lemon. I've been lucky with internet purchases so far...

Spalted ash solid body. The f-hole goes half way into the body, it's just cosmetic. It's not chambered or hollow.

Re: Value HH tele?

I have to thank you for your suggestions guys. I looked into every one of the guitars you proposed. Thank you very much for your time, I appreciate it very much.

Re: Value HH tele?

Unless the pickups are original Seymour Duncan The Mags or PRS Chainsaws, you are going to need to change them. That looks like the beginnings of a serious upgrade project.

They must be some cheap humbuckers. It's in the budget to change them, and maybe the bridge as well.

Serious as in, I need to drop a lot of money into it?

Fernandes makes a couple of HH Teles. There's the FTR-80

and the TEJ series, which is available in SS, SH and HH

I've got an FTR (same color as above) I bought as a project that I would be willing to let go of cheap. Your choice of pickups, since I haven't installed any yet. US$75 plus pickup costs. The only problem is that shipping from Japan be expensive, but could be as cheap as $50. PM me if interested. It's just sitting in my office gathering dust.

EDIT: Just noticed you're no longer in the market! :duh:

I would most probably have taken you up on that offer. Not really my kind of colour, but I'd definitely consider it - especially at that kind of price range. It's a shame I found another so soon.

Re: Value HH tele?

that green schecter is a good looking piece of gear, but from the terms "value" and "H/H" my search engine gives only 1 result:

vm_tele_cust.jpg

i got the 2xP90 version, but the body was routed for either, so i got a spare scratchplate from an guitar parts guru and have geared it up with about 20 different pickups.
i love the 7 1/4" fingerboard radius, and this thing seriously steals time from my PRS SE and my gibson, if you can believe that. it was a mess out-of-the-box, but a string change and a bit of general TLC made this the most playable guitar i've owned.

pound-for-pound, this may be the best H/H tele in the world today.

From my research I agree with that. I don't really like the scratchplate though... maybe at some point in the future. For 150GBP used, you can't go wrong.

The tele I got arrived yesterday. A few "minor" problems with it. Most importantly, the nut is too short. I got around that by shimming the neck (away from the bridge) to create a slight angle and being slightly generous with the neck bow that the truss rod creates. I like my action a bit higher than most people, so that doesn't create a problem for me as far as playability - I also play a lot of slide, so that's perfectly fine.

The other problem is the pickup rings. Although they are flat, they are slanted. I need to get some non-slanted rings to go with the new pickups I'm going to put in. Lastly, the neck lacquer is pretty thick and sticky. I'll sand that down to a satin finish, and it should be fine.

On a more positive note, the bridge is better value than I was expecting, so I won't be replacing that -at least for the time being.

I was expecting some minor problems with a cheap "partcaster", but it's all fixable so I'm pretty happy with it. It's a stunning guitar to look at, and the neck profile is to my liking. It seems that I wasn't super lucky on this one, but the base of a nice playing, nice sounding guitar is all there.

Again, thank you everyone for your suggestions - I looked into every one of them.

Re: Value HH tele?

These FMT HH Tele's made in Korea for about 5 years are killer. They moved the line to Indonesia around '08. My hands are on the smaller side and the thin little neck is welcome. They were designed to give Gibson LP's a run for there money and they do. Yhis one has a set of Pearly Gates pups in it.

Re: Value HH tele?

Glad you found something that suits you. But if you decide you're unhappy with the nut, go ahead and replace it, unless you're playing slide exclusively. In my estimation, people don't pay enough attention to the nut. :18:

Seriously, though, a properly fitted and filed nut can make a big difference in how the guitar feels and plays.

Re: Value HH tele?

If you can find someone flying back to the UK from US & they can carryon that might be the best way to beat the tax thing. Good luck.
