Vantage guitars?

Anyone got some info on Vantage guitars? Specifically the VP-700 Performer? Japanese 80's guitar made by Matsumoku, it seems.
Well, I found an auction for one, current bid is 661 sek, which I think should be around $100. Still got about 1 week left until the auction ends, but is it worth it to bid on it?

Re: Vantage guitars?

I had a Vantage LP copy back in the 80's and from what I can recall it was pretty damn good! Strange coz I was only thinking about that one a few weeks ago and why I got rid.... then I remembered it was part ex'd to get a Ibanez Artist AR300!

Re: Vantage guitars?

Somebody that I knew at college in the mid-Eighties had one. Double cutaway, banded body construction - as if through neck. I cannot recall whether the neck was set or screwed on. Solid guitar but lacking the character of more expensive rivals. Should make an excellent host for some American pickups.

Re: Vantage guitars?

^ the one i've played was very similar, and a bolt-on
a pretty basic guitar, but an excellent player

Re: Vantage guitars?

The other guitarist in Church has an Vantage Accoustic, that he has been using for almost 2 decades. Very much top notch.

Re: Vantage guitars?

Friend had one of their Flying V's WAY BIYD,pretty sure it was a bolt-on.
Cool enough guitar, tho, although he ended up trading it in towards a Gibby V.
If it's cheap enough,why not?

Re: Vantage guitars?

No further bids yet, will decide when it's closer to the deadline. Neck through, all original except converted to left-handed nut. Original hardcase. It looks cool.

Re: Vantage guitars?

Neck through.

Have you seen images of the rear of the instrument?

Very like its contemporary, the Westone Thunder, the banded appearance of the Vantage VP-700 body from the front is no definitive indicator of how its neck is attached.

Re: Vantage guitars?

I have a Vantage 335 copy. It actually plays and sounds great. I still prefer to play my real ES-335, but I used the Vantage for years and still do from time to time. The pickups are a little weak but I have found no reason to change them.

Re: Vantage guitars?

I've had one of their V-s for about 20 years - the FV-575. Bolt-on, but the frets are a bit short for my tastes. It's also got a narrow nut more like a Les Paul than the Gibby V. In fact, Gibby Vs have come and gone but the Vantage remains. It's the only V I can get along with besides a Jackson KV2T. Can't play a Rhoads or a regular KV due to the necks, but these two are comfy.

The stock Vantage pickups should be "the mythical "MMK-45" models, and if they have two rows of adjustable poles, you can set them low in the body and raise the poles incredibly high for some very detailed EQing.

Switched mine out some years ago for a Distortion and 59, and they're much better.
