velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

tone4days

Heel Whacker
it seams that the hook and eye bond is greater than the glue bond that secures the tape to the pedals on my board

when i remove the pedals, the tape stays on the carpet material of the board and separates from the pedal

any good suggestions on what tape to use so as to have it hold onto to the board well enough, but not separate from the pedals until i want it to (e.g. resale, etc)?

thanks

Re: velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

I use the industrial grade Velcro that comes in a roll. I got it from Home Depot. It's very secure in holding it to the pedal & the board. I have found that when the pedals have been down for a long time that happens & the velcro has to either be reapplied or I just reglue it.

Something to consider is to use wooden blocks with screws to mount the pedals on the board. One small block on each side with a screw works. I've done this on one of my boards but it does make it a little more of a pita to get them off when needed. I have also read of people using bicycle chain links & mounting one end to the pedal(with the provided screws) and the other to the board. They are small so you can get the pedals really close together supposedly. Velcro is easier but it gets messy. A good product to clean up the pedals before reapplying the velcro is WD40. It cleans all the build up of adhesive really well, you just have to make sure its really dry before reapplying the new velcro.

thanks ... yeah, that is the kind of velcro i used ... pretty industrial strength stuff from a roll ... the carpet is whatever came stock on the gator board i got ...

i was happy that the pedals stick to the board so well - really gives me peace of mind transporting the board when gigging ... i really had to use a lot of force to remove the pedal .... but then i saw that the velcro stayed on the board ... there wasnt even too much goopy residue on the pedal, most of the glue stayed on the tape

one trick i learned the hard way is to put all the pieces of velcro in the same direction on the pedal ... the large foot print duncan pedals seam to need more than one strip of tape ... i put one across the back edge and one vertical in the middle of the pedal ... very hard to remove as velcro only wants to come off linearly, not cross-wise

any preferred type of glue to reapply the tape to the pedal?

Re: velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

What I do is first clean off the bottom of the pedal with a solvent (I use paint thinner - it dries fairly quickly and leaves no residue),

Then I roughen the surface with sandpaper,

Then, using spray adhesive, apply a very thin "powder" coat to the pedal,

Allow it to dry completely (until it is not tacky to the touch at all,

Put the velcro on.

When I need to remove a pedal from the pedalboard, I insert a screwdriver between the velcro layers to gently pry them apart without putting much stress on the pedal-velcro bond.

I use MEK or Acetone .... whichever I have on hand. They are both a little more volatile than paint thinner, though.

Re: velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

Buy a small can of Carpet Seaming Glue at the hardware store. It's basically super strong rubber cement. It'll hold the velcro onto the bottoms of the pedals, and it's still possible to remove the glue in case you sell the pedal. Goof Off or any petroleum distillate will loosen even the strongest rubber cement.

Carpet Seaming Glue is what I've used....especially on heavy pedals that tend to break free.

Re: velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

This always happens to me. In Florida, the high humidity makes the glue fail way before the Velcro. Industrial strength doesn't work- pedals end up in a gooey mess in the bottom of the case. Dual Lock from Radio Shack has better glue, but the lock itself is crazy strong, so you'd better really like where you put your pedals.
Honestly, I hate velcro these days. I've been using zip ties lately.

Cut out foam and let the pedals sit in the cut-outs, as long as a kepe my board "This side up", the pedals nhever move. You can also run your power cables under the foam.

Need a picture.

Re: velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

I got tired of dealing with velcro and the mess it comes with. I'm building my new board right now and it's gonna be plywood, drilled holes, and zip ties for this one.

I was contemplating this myself, but a couple of times a year I decide to rewire/replace crap on the pedal board . . .

Re: velcro tape separating from pedal - suggestions?

the thing i REALLY want to do is go the Rich_S method where you take the bottoms off completely and attach the pedals through the board from the underside and don't use interconnect cables but rather hard wire the ins and outs for signal and power ... i am just a little chicken to attempt it and am not quite sure all my pedals lend themselves to that approach ... i am not quite sure what kind of case i'd use and/ or how to modify it

the other even more daunting, but even more attractive, approach is the cornish-style where you take all the guts out of all the pedals and mount them underneath with just the switches and pot knobs on top .. i KNOW that is a bridge too far for me and my limited tools, workspace, current experience/ability

You could modify how he did it. Screw it down but use interconnected cables and run everything under the board. Your pedals are secure, the board is clean, but it is 100% reversible.
